Topic: Is it possible to say two words at once?

The human vocal chords can be pretty amazing, we seem to be able to make a whole range of sounds. I've watched youtube videos of people singing backwards and then playing the video forwards - and they can be pretty spot on. But what I would really like to know is if a human voice can sing lead vocals and backup vocals at the same time. The way you'd do it, I think, is to overlay the two voices together in an audio program - listen to it over and over, and try to reproduce the sound with your voice.... reckon it's possible???

I've heard of people being able to sing two notes at the same time before (ie. just tones, not actual pronunciation), but I would imagine that it would be a pretty big leap to go from that to actually singing two parts to a song. The amount of training required just to sing one verse, let along an entire song really doesn't seem worth it, even though it would be cool.

haven't you listened to an album in the last 20 years or so? singers have been doing it for ages... ;)

wonder why they always need extra backup singers when they perform live tho :\

It is possible to sing two parts at the one time. Some Asian country does it and it's f***ing insane. They describe it like learning to speak - it's something their culture does inherently and it's very hard to learn or teach.

Looks like it's called "throat singing" and it's Tuvan/Mongolian.

I watched a doco on it years ago and it's fkn incredible. A very weird sound - they hit these weird frequencies by shaping their mouths and throat while also using their vocal chords.

pretty sure humans have dual vocal cords, so yes it's very possible.

i think the real question is, can two people both say half a word (complete garbage if listened to independently) then have both sounds played together and form a word

brb getting baked.

the problem is that the pitch of the voice works kind of like a panpipe, ie you blow into a pipe and it makes a certain pitch, longer pipes make lower pitch and vice versa. Now because the vocal chord relies on air passing thru it to vibrate(resonate) the pipe to make the pitch, to make a 2nd pitch would require the vocalchord to be 2 different sizes (and there fore 2 different things) at once so to speak, which is a physical impossibility.
