It's also f***ed. Because Telstra/Optus weren't blessed with the notion of foresight.
Thousands of miles of Optic fibre, with no way to trace it. Every time you have Optic on a site you have to get the service provide to run a new coper wire in the conduit so you can find out where the f*** it goes. GG guys. Also, god forbid they actually do any real f***ing accurate As-Constructed, that would of made things to easy. Also 3 weeks ago; Optus: "We dont have any optics there" Me: "Well i'm looking at a pit, with Optics in it and Optus stamped all over it" Optus "There is nothing on our records, we dont have anything there" Me: "Ok we'll just remove this pit since it isn't here" Optus: "Oh no, dont do that. We'll have to send someone out there in a week to see if it's ours" /week later Optus: "Oh yeah, we do have something here, It will cost you $8,000 for us to move it" |

Telstra have had FTTP for a while now, the downside is you have to have a building developer put it in during the construction of your house. That was 12 months or so ago, dunno if they have changed it since.

They have fibre in a lot of new estates, unfortunatley, it means that you're stuck using Telstra for your connection. They also charge a lot.

Yeah, that is my understanding. Since there is Fibre there is no copper back to an exchange meaning apart from wireless, it is Telstra or nothing. I don't see this changing and it also means that no matter what happens with FTTN, you can't get it. I would like to hear more about it (pricing, presentation, speeds) from the OP. |

I think the way it works in some cases is that the estate will build its own private exchange, and then get "some isp" to provide the internet service.

The Telstra docs i have read explain the engagement is done by the developer before the estate is created. The developer lays the fibre to Telstra spec and then pays Telstra to come in and setup their kit in a DC built to Telstra specs onsite, Telstra then handles the back haul to their exchange/pop. Im am not sure at the end of the process who owns the fibre in the ground or who maintains it but I would guess it could be handed over to Telstra? |

Telstra would own it. Or UE-Com (Optus Fibre).
