Hey im looking at getting a new laptop. Its mainly for uni work. So a good battery would be handy. Also need a webcam for skype. Looking at spending around the 1000 mark. Any ideas?

So tiny in fact that it's next to useless for real uni work (yes I've used an Eee PC).
obligatory "BUY A DELL" post

I'm typing from a Dell laptop that I bought for uni last year. Price, specs, size and weight were just perfect for my study needs (Vostro 1400). Paid $1400 for it, but I think you can get better specs for $1100-1200 these days. Also CompleteCare warranty for the win = can spill a drink on your laptop then trip down a set of stairs and they'll replace your machine at no cost.

yeah my brother actually called me tonight asking about buying a new laptop

He only needs it for net/work/tv/movies - willing to spend ~1.8k or so, preferably less

I'm over here nearly 2 years, so I am outta the loop....

thanks

Get an XPS 1530 heardy

I have the 1330 which is sweet, but unless you need the mobility, the 15 has a GT

dell's keyboards always bothered me, there's something about them that made me glad I didn't get one once they are no longer new. has it been fixed?

Its not the best keyboard I will admit, I prefer asus

But no serious qualms

If your going for a dell, check with your uni if they have any student discounts on offer. I know griffith has 5% off any computer/laptop from them.

I'm not quite sure how you can top dell's CompleteCare warranty :)

Posting on my M1530 I picked up about a month ago, upgraded it to about 2300 + GST from memory.

My only complaint is that the hard drive sits right under the left hand palm rest and will get uncomfortably toasty if you are running it in summer without aircon. I'm an A/C whore these days tho so it doesn't bother me too much.

Who are you Morgan?

Anyway... I have nothing to disagree with about Dell, only that they aren't the be-all-and-end-all...

Asus are excellent and better priced, and there is nothing wrong with Japanese made notebooks (Fujitsu, Sony). I would figure out what you want, and then look at all of the models that would suit you. Not just Dell.

Depends on what you want, but you DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

Fuk that I wouldn't swap. I love the mobility of it and I use my desktop for playing serious games (m1330 can play TF2 well enough).
