Has me kinda confused though, I expected it to be a step up from the 8800, turns out it's not on various levels.

My old Radeon card was a 9600. This thread title confused me.

Nvidia's fault more than anyone else's.

I guess NVIDIA and ATI haven't realised that there are numbers outside the 2000-3999 and 6000-9999 ranges, and letters other than G,T,X,L,S,E. Someone re-send the memo.

not a bad effort but still very slow compared to really old cards like the original 8800GTS which is pretty disappointing imo...

I mean seriously, >100W for GPUs these days? If it were for commercial reasons, there'd be no reason to have GPUs chewing more than 3.5W like 10 years ago. Instead, their solution always seems to be "more transistors!"

Keep in mind this is despite the fact that dies have now shrunk by about a factor of ten, and we're using 1/6th the voltage for each transistor.

Tomshardware's review shows the card sits below the 8800GT and the HD3870. When AA is turned on though, it surpasses the HD3870.

more transistors = more processing power = more power consumption

that's just how it is. more crunching power simply requires more transistors; there is no way around this in a binary machine.

i think it's very important to work on proper idling so that consumption is massively reduced when the cpu or gpu isn't working hard. that will be much easier and probably have more significant benefits than trying to reduce maximum consumption while increasing processing power.

this is a mid level card, they are trying to finally get some organisation in the cards names and ranks (8800 = 9900 level not 9600). also it may have been a 9600 in ati but it didnt have a gt on the end. still silly name tho.

power for performance, does anyone remember pentium cpu's? until c2d came along it was going the same way, you dont think they are trying to make a gpu that can perform faster with lower power and size?

the reason they are releasing it before the flagship is they have seen where the money is going now, and they have est a reputation for being the fastest, no need to release the most exp flagship till ati launch 4000 series. so it looks good, but still prefer amd/ati cards, they have a better feel/look/IQ

Why are people comparing this to the 8800 series? It's a budget card, shouldn't it be compared to the 8600 series?

check out the middle card. 2 x DVI, 1x HDMI and 1 x DisplayPort.... madness.

Cause the 8800 was released in November 2006, some 16 months ago and there still isn't a mid-range card that can compete with it.

Seems pretty dodgy to me that the first 9000series Geforce they're releasing is actually a step down in many respects, even if it's cheaper. Wouldn't it have made more sense to just release another 8800 and then save the 9000 title for a decent card?

Also, why did they use different settings for each card? Defeat the purpose much?

are you blind or just cant read? THIS IS A MID LVL CARD. how is it a step down in many respects? its nearly as fast as the lowest HIGH lvl card 8800gt, its cheaper, it has no driver optimisations yet, just look at how much 8000 series improved with driver releases. and where the hell would ANOTHER 8800 series card fit?

u nv fanbois have not seen a non flagship launch yet i know, but seriously look at what it is and where its placed. its an excellently placed/priced/performing card. if u dont want one dont get one, but dont bag something you clearly cant understand.

I got to agree with Anono here. This card is a mid range card, an upgrade on the 8600 and a very worthy one.
It's not just a crippled cheap G92 either, the 9600 uses a new chipset, the G94.

Hmmm 9600gt for $222 or 8800gt 512 for $258?

I think 8800gt still the card to beat.

This is what I hate about video cards these days. You'd think that a higher number would mean it's their current, best card but not always. I swear they do it on purpose to confuse newb pc buyers into buying what they think is a good card only to find out it's s*** and to have to buy something else.

I was going to get another ATI card with my new pc because I mostly play source based games but f***ed if I could figure out which was their high end card, I saw some high numbered cards at <$200 and some low numbered cards >$300 and some in between that defy both price ranges so which is which? In the end I just said screw it I cbf reading 100 reviews to find out which card is their high end s*** and went with nvidia instead.

LOL how could you be confused about the ati cards? there highest number is there fastest card. 3870x2 fastest and like every other series of cards ever released 3870 is faster then 3850. 2900xt is probably faster then the 3870 in most things but it is the flagship last series, so thats normal. and anyone that buys the 9600gt that doesnt know about cards WILL NOT be disappointed.

this forum is turning into a bunch of sooking sooky cry babies. it takes less then a minute to go to tomshardware vga table and check which is fastest to slowest. no need for 100 reviews. or u can go to ocau and look at the video card chart.

It is getting painful to know offhand where a particular card slots into the performance ladder.

There is just SO many different models and revisions of cards in the Nvidia range.

Derr 9800's. The numbers really aren't that difficult.

Looks like we could be waiting even longer for this "new technology" from Nvidia.

7900GT will pwn the 8600GT.

Reason being, 8600GT is crippled with a 128 bit memory interface, technology from the 6 series... The 7900GT runs a 256bit interface.

The 7900GT will be better than even an 8600GTS.
