I have an mp3. I want to remove what little vocal track is on there and then speed it up a tad.
I only have winamp so I haven't been able to look at the separate tracks. Can anyone help, or suggest plugins or free software? I only need to do it to one mp3. Cheers |

Is that due to mp3 compression?
Does that mean that the vocals can't be taken out? Only reason for the vocals wanting to be taken out is so it doesn't so8und chimpmunky if I speed it up a bit. |

The best you can do is to remove the frequencies that the voice is spamming. This will also take a little of the music away too.

Kat, there will only be 2 "seperate tracks" - what comes out of the left speaker and what comes out of the right. All the sound out of these channels is sort of squashed down into the one track. If you were in the recording studio they would all be seperate, but when it gets delivered to you, you only get the 2 channels.
There are ways of fiddling with EQ to minimize the vocal frequencies but you need someone who knows a bit more about it than me. Speeding it up is possible and not difficult, but often you'll get quite a reduction in quality when you do this (unless you're using some really good software). |

If you use decent software to speed up the track, it WILL NOT change the frequency of the vocals - ie. you will not get chipmunks. You will still get a loss in quality.

Is that due to mp3 compression? Maybe, but I would say it's for the same reason they don't provide you with the composite FX layers of a movie when you buy a DVD, nor do they provide you with the PSD when you buy a poster to hang on your wall... Does that mean that the vocals can't be taken out? You can lower the levels of certain frequencies to achieve a 'karaoke' like effect. Only reason for the vocals wanting to be taken out is so it doesn't so8und chimpmunky if I speed it up a bit. Well the software I use, Sony Vegas (which is for video editing, but does a great job of sound anyway) doesn't pitch things up when you speed them up. |

Loss of quality is not really an issue for me.
It is an instrumental track that has a few back up whispers throughout (two 2-3 second bits to be exact) and I want to make it a tiny bit faster. It will be played in a large room, once. B.Hardball: It can definitely wait until tonight. Much appreciated. |

pretty sure that audacity can alter speed without affecting pitch;

My guess is there would be a greater loss of quality using Audacity, but if Kat doesn't care then maybe she should give that a go.
Yeah but you confused channels for tracks No I didn't:p |

What's the name of the track? You might be able to find a version minus the vocals.

Rev, the track I have is the instrumental version :)
YoungNastyMen, Wow, that is exactly what I want and it nearly removes the vocals all together. Awesome!!! Now, to figure out how to record off winamp, *runs off to google* |

But there could possibly be another version that just has music and nothing else. Don't make me come over there!

recording off winamp is easy, just goto pref's and select the output as Nullsoft disk writer and volla you have a WAV file.

Goldwave has a remove vocals function which effectively works by comparing the two channels and removing the difference between the 2 and 8khz range.
The speedup function in goldwave will affect the pitch though so it'll sound chipmunky. |
