Hey guys,
I'm moving this friday and i'm trying to figure out what internet provider to go with, i want one with good speeds and a pretty high download limit. There will be one desktop computer and two laptops connected, also another question on that matter, how do we go about setting up wireless internet, and do you lose much speed with wireless? Sorry for the noobness, i've been looking around a bit but i just don't know whats best out of adsl2+, naked adsl, cable etc. All help appreciated. |

I'm on iiNet Naked DSL. I've set my settings for uber ping, as such I had a ping of 20 to a couple internode TF2 servers (score screen was showing it to be 9..).
I download at a slowish 300kb/s, however if I change to the settings I get about 600kb/s. My main PC is wired and another computer used mainly for browsing and WoW is wireless. |

i changed from iinet 80gb adsl2+ to tpg 150gb adsl2+
I actually get faster speeds, better sync and more data allowance with TPG just hope to buggery you don't have to call their tech support, its damn useless I'm sync'd at 22mbit down, a little over 1mbit up and I can easily push out the full 1mbit up and 2MB/sec~ or so down on a good torrent the only s*** thing is that 100GB of your 150gb limit is only available between 2am and 7am, not so much of a problem if you're a big torrent-er with scheduling and what not iinet 80gb = $129/month + phone etc tpg 150gb = $59/month |

WRONG
iinet ndsl 90gb (30p 60op) + iitalk (voip phone unlimited calls) = $90 TPG 150gb + phone = $70 + $26 (no included calls) = $96 (50p 100op TPG have a ndsl trial going on but its not easy to get on) last edited by Anono at 09:11:08 21/Feb/08 |

where did i recommend iinet? nowhere. but his info was wrong. and ndsl isnt as bad as u make it out to be. there have been bad cases but there are loads of good ones too.
best priced ndsl plans are with exetel. but im not recommending them either. |

what the f***, when did I say you recommended iinet?
where is my info wrong (besides the $59/$69 for tpg150g) ndsl IS as bad as I make it out to be, you pay for uploads so you aren't getting anywhere near a full 90gb of downloads if you're a big download-er, which lots of us are, you're getting maybe 50gb of downloads because you'll need to seed torrents to get torrents, and not be a general wanker ndsl is f***ed, paying for uploads is something I will never do outside of a commercial hosting environment |

Mongie the results of that test were,
Line of Sight: 2120 m Estimated Cable: 2862 m Estimated Attenuation: 40 Estimated Maximum Speed: 8000 Ok, so after reading all this i really dont like the idea of uploads counting towards my limit so i guess ADSL2+ would be my best options. Now with the modem, am i best to get the one the provider offers or get my own? Also after some though i think im going to cable my desktop pc but run the two laptops wireless, how do i go about doing this ? last edited by Deathwalker at 10:15:20 21/Feb/08 |

get a belkin or dlink wireless adsl2+ router
I've got one which I use purely for its wireless functions now because I've got a cisco 877 doing the adsl2+ but yeah the belkin served me very well for a long time, has 4 ethernet ports for your main computer/hardwired lan and a built in wireless AP which is very easy to configure with a web interface (linky) |

So i get whichever modem the provider gives me, and then run it through that router or do i just use that as my modem?

I would look at Billion or perhaps Dlink at a stretch for a modem.
Line of Sight: 2120 m Looks like you're going to get ~ 8mbit. |

its average but you should pull 500KB/sec pretty easily, so its a step up
and yeah if your laptops dont already have wireless just get a cheap usb 802.11b/g adapter from umart for $50-100 nothing wrong with belkin |

After working at officeworks for four years, and listening to the issues that iiNet users had with Belkin products... I can tell you... THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH BELKIN.

tpg, internode, iinet - in that order
tpg beacuse its cheap, internode and iinet because they've got great local call centers and everything just "works" for the most part, unless of course you're trying to sign up to iinet naked dsl mongie, the same could be said about working anywhere with any product does officeworks stock more belkin products than other brands? I'm sure someone working for umart could whinge about (mostly stupid) customers complaints regarding their dlink or netgear routers the internets are just too hard for some folks, especially people stupid enough to buy hardware at office works |

Yes, Officeworks stocked a lot more belkin routers / networking gear than any other brand.
Yes, there were far more customer complaints. Yes, the products do not work as well Yes, the products have a higher failure rate, and a higher rate of DOA. Anything else? What is your experience with Belkin gear that makes you so sure they're good? You've owned one? last edited by mongie at 11:10:47 21/Feb/08 |

Internode is just way too pricey, the plans im looking between are:
TPG ADSL2+ Super 2** 40 GB on peak 110 GB off peak $69.99 TPG ADSL2+ Premium Plus~ 100 GB on peak none off peak $129.99 iiNet Home 7 (bundle) 60 GB on peak 60 GB off peak $129.95 Think i might have to rule iiNet out because you have to get a phone deal with them which is an extra $30 a month. |

my experience comes from being a monkey on an adsl/dialup helpdesk for years
fact is, when you only stock a very small number of devices from a very select few companies, its much easier to think something is a cluster failure |

I'd read the Whirlpool forums. If you're going to do a lot of P2P or whatever, find out if they shape Peer traffic. I've heard TPG is shoddy for latency...Internode, Netspace and iiNet always seem good (I'm with iiNet). |

My personal take is that I think there are some CPE chipsets (broadcom) which some dslams have issues maintaining sync with at the higher bit-rates.

I'm really not going to be using it, its just so i can connect the internet, i've decided to go with the TPG adsl2+ 40/110 plan. |

i dont like dlink or belkin
i like billion nice 7300g; 8000mpbs pretty much means you're a fair distance from your exchange; 80000mbs = a bit less than a meg a second, so is still a pretty healthy connection |

iinet offer a tool on their website which changes settings with your account to give you optimal settings for different uses
you can be a "gamer" or a "speed freak" etc, pretty sure internode has something similar |

yeah actually come to think of it I dont know anything about my home line
I mean the only device plugged into the phone line is my modem, when someone sends me a bill for it I will just pay it and ask no questions I'm guessing its still with telstra (home line basic $26/month?), either way its still damn cheap I've pulled 2MB/sec down off it and I use it as a VPN end point for a http proxy at work, it has no problems pumping out 100KB/s + upload |
