I think my work machine needs one of these. The current card benchmarked lower than monkeys with crayons, and it took 45 minutes just to render this page.

Get either the 512mB 8800GTS (not the 320/640, ie the G92 model) or an 8800GT 512mB G92 model. Make sure you get a gddr3 and not a cheaper ddr2 version (if you can tell, or if they make these at all, iunno :P).

neither. with the 9600gt to be released in the next week or so you would be a fool. if u need something RIGHT NOW, get a 3870 for around $260 and sell it and get the 9600gt if you need to. thou im sure the 3870 will handle what you want and save you ~$100

g92 8800gts > 8800gt.

Also, yeah, the 9600gt's are being released soon, could be a few weeks before some places get stock. They perform a bit little worse than the 8800gt/gts, as they are only made to be the next mid-range equivalent of the 8600gs afiak, but they are gonna be in the realm of approximately 50-100$ cheaper. With probably not too much stock and high demand they might be a similar price on release, or they might be worth buying if they aren't.

Prolly best off waiting, the other cards might drop, or to see 9600gt pricing.

Get a 8800gt 512MB

9600gt is a little slower and the release date has been delayed. It would have to be around $200 (which I doubt) on release for me to consider it as I can get the 8800gt 512MB for $258 atm and the price has been dropping lately.

I dunno, 9600GTs are looking to be expensive. nV were promising sub-200 USD, but they're already out there at around 270USD. That'll possibly mean around AUD350 for us.
And yeah, they've all been recalled, so will be a little longer now :/

Nah dont get a GT.

The new GTS 512 ones are almost on par with the GTX due to using the same core and having more shaders.

I have a 8800GTS 512 G92 and it owns.

I got my Albatron one from CA for $459 bout a month ago.

From a friend they are shipping somewhere at staff prices of between 250-300. So you're looking 300'ish, at the very very least, and even then probably a 256mB one.

8800GTS 512mB for about 390$ imo, or a cheaper 8800GT 512mB (make sure it's the newer g92 version tho, and gddr3) for around 350.

I'm fairly sure any 8800GT is going to have the new G92 GPU... afaik the only one you are going to get confused with is the 8800GTS. Both the 640 and 320 meg versions were the original G80 GPU, the new 512meg model is the G92.

The other difference is the original 8800GTS cards run 320bit memory whereas the new G92 GPU models only run 256bit, like the 7 series cards.

Apparently the going rate for 9600gt's is between 210-230'ish, if anyone is interested.
