Looking to buy a new chair for my PC, and I was wondering if anyone here had any recommendations of where to go, or even recommendations on what to get. Not looking at spending more than $500 - $600 though, so things like those $1200 aeron chairs aren't quite in my ballpark :)

ffs, I read the title and straight away googled Herman Miller to link to aeron :
so I am going to post it anyway http://www.hermanmiller.com/aeron/ Seriously worth the cash, had them in the Syd office, when I do eventually go home I will be buying only for my home without doubt, a comfy chair is worth it and it'll last for years EDIT: We also used these these chairs - they might be cheaper? last edited by HeardY at 00:10:51 18/Feb/08 |

I just want a chair that'll last me for more than a year. I'm sick of these cheap plastic s*** chairs that just break. I want a chair with metal arms, metal legs and metal wheels ffs. What's with the world today with everything being cheap plastic s*** that lasts a week.

My chairs don't break but it's time for a new one. I'm after one with arm rests too and it needs to have good posture support. Any ideas?

there's some $200-300 leather chairs at officeworks, do leather chairs get all hot and sweaty in summer? I can't link to them because officeworks website creators are idiots and the entire thing runs from javascript links so f*** them and their noob ways.

The only two things a non-Aeron will do for you is suck and break.
Until I used one I every day I would have found it hard to believe anything was worth that much money, especially something that you just sit on. But I sit on it at least 8 hours every day; I find other chairs really uncomfortable to sit on now for any length of time. They have (or at least had) a 13 year warranty, so if you mentally spread the cost out over 13 years its totally worth it. The allure of those $400 ones I know is great, but I suspect they'll break or at least stop working well after only a few years, plus I can almost guarantee they're nowhere near as comfortable for long term sitting. I can't remember where they sell them in Brisbane but you can definitely just go try them out. |

check auction sites like greys etc for aerons - they last forever so 2nd hand ones are good value. Lots of tech companies buy them for their staff then go boom and auction them off. I went into the office for the last company we worked with on GameArena (the design company) and they all have aerons; I expressed amazement that they went to such an expense (cuz its a fairly small company) and apparently they just bought them in bulk from some expired disney studio or something that fell apart in sydney.

Well, when i went into empire i picked up a $900 retail chair for $400, it just came with no box, but was still fully wrapped in plastic. They couldn't sell it to any business like that, so were jsut clearing it off. Aparently fairly common. So it's worth getting up and going into the show room.
But i'd take trogs point too, wouldn't be surprised about that at all. |

The Mirra is a little cheaper than the Aeron. Go check em out in their show room. I like them both, some people at my office prefer the Mirra to the Aeron.

Hrmmm, yeah, I'm thinking maybe now its worth putting up with my s***ty broken ass chair for a few more weeks till I can afford an aeron. The 13 year warranty sold me, cos I'd probably go through 2 or 3 chairs in that time anyway and it'd end up costing more than just buying an aeron.

Usually seems to end up being the casters getting busted or coming off, or they get broken when I move house (thats whats happened to my last two chairs). My current chair is just a cheapass, dodgy, uncomfortable piece of crap which is filly the gap till I could buy something good.

We all have Herman Miller Aeron's at work, and they're great. Thing is about the Aeron, yeah you can pay $100 for a cheap chair, but you might have to buy a new one every year. 10 years later you've paid what you would have for an Aeron, which will show no signs of failing.
If you want one, look for them secondhand. Herman Miller also make some other chairs similar to the Aeron at around the $600 price range - they're not as good, but certainly decent. |

i must be lucky coz i have a cheapish ~$200 vinyl highback office chair from officeworks that is almost 8years old & nothing on it has broken yet. it's comfy too.
at work we have some cheap s*** plastic & fabric lowback chairs that pretty much suck... they don't break easily but they are pretty uncomfortable. so i guess my work is one that is too pov (or more likely doesn't give a s*** about whether it's employees are comfortable) to buy everyone expensive office chairs. :/ |

What do you do with your chairs? I've got the same $100 super a-mart computer chair from 11 years ago and its still going strong. I don't know if it's the rolling over the carpet or whether my chair is just s*** but my casters are all breaking. So far I've broken 2 of them off, the little springy thingy that holds the chair in the reclined position doesn't hold it anymore and it just moves about. Chair is about 2 years old I guess. The little washer that holds the bottom of the piston for the gas lift in place has gone walkabouts and the chair tilts from side to side. IMHO cheap s*** ain't what it used to be :( |

Don't get that f***ing chair from office works that doesn't have that recliner function. You will snap it, fall backward, kick your desk and machine over, and f*** your monitor up, I did.

Also what are the arms made of? Last plastic armed chair I had, the arms snapped and the back fell off and I went WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I use an "Estate" chair from Freedom.. nice and comfortable, tough and all the critical parts are made from metal rather than cheap-ass plastic.
Go to http://www.freedom.com.au/instore/homeoffice/index.html an have a look.. it's in the bottom left corner of the first page. |

- 1 for the Officeworks Quantum chairs, comfortable enough, but the gas strut on mine has penetrated the wheel base and now scrapes the carpet. Took a year or so. The strut now stops me from scooting across the room for fun. And hurts the carpet. Apparently this is not an isolated problem. Also I'm a skinny nerd, not fat, so no excuse for Officeworks there.
