Higher it is means you are probably over weight and dont exercise enough

60-80 is around average

max rate is 220 - age

should train around 60% of ur max to lose weight

But anyone that knows me knows that i'm pretty un-fit. So I cant see how 60-80 is average... I'm not fat... yet. But i'm ~15kg heavier then I was 3-4 years ago...

40 - 60 is pretty good. The lower end might be dodgey depending on your body stats. Up around 80 is probably getting a bit too fast.

Guys who's heart rates are up at about 100 should be concerned... get some physical exercise up ya.

What the hell? Once again, surprisingly (NOT) a lot of misinformation in this thread.

A normal resting heart rate is between 60 - 80 bpm (approx). Anything significantly outside of this range at rest could be caused by a number of important medical conditions, and sometimes its a variation of normal. A resting heart rate of 100bpm is not normal. A resting heart rate of 35bpm is not normal. It IS normal however for heart rate to vary with respiration - it increases with inspiration, as more blood is forced to the heart, and decreases again on expiration...

On a rest week my RHR is about 44. On any normal working week after decent rest it's around 49.
MHR is 195, VO2max is 62ml/kg/min. VO2 threshold at ~180. Have to recalculate my LTHR (Lactate Threshold) in two weeks, after the crits championships.

Edit: FWIW, right now my RHR is 71 - though I just finished racing a crit (45 minutes) 90 minutes ago.

CHUB, You race at the front of C grade crits... how the f*** can you have an RHR of 98!? I just assume you measured this while lying down etc?

Is 180 your MHR or VO2 threshold? From what I understand you're younger than me - for your RHR to be that high and MHR to be that low (relatively), something seems very wrong.
Raven

RHR is resting heart rate. Measured lying down.
MHR is maximum heart rate. Either calculated or seen for less than a 5 second extreme effort (the most I've actually seen is 191).
VO2max is measures in ml/kg/min - it's your lung capacity. It tells you the number of milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute that your lungs can take in and distribute to the bloodstream. The higher this value the better.
LTHR is your lactate threshold heart rate. This is the heart rate at which lactate starts to rapidly accumulate in the blood and muscles, at a rate which the body cannot clear it fast enough, causing muscle fatigue.

All these figures give you a better idea of fitness than just resting heart rate.

You're resting when exercising? Because if you're at 80-95, you're not really exercising now are you?

Straight out of Wikipedia.
When resting, the average adult human heart beats at about 70 bpm (males) and 75 bpm (females); however, this rate varies among people and can be significantly lower in athletes.

A few reasons why athletes can have low pulse rates is because they tend to have more hemoglobin in their blood and their lungs are more efficient at loading the hemoglobin with oxygen so they don't need to pump as much blood around the body.

If you have a low heart rate and you don't do hardcore exercising you may have a problem. Your body may not be getting all the oxygen it needs, specially around the peripheral limbs.

That's only part of it.
The heart is like any other muscle, and when used more will increase in size, giving it more strength and volume.
Your lung capacity (as I mentioned before, measured as VO2max in ml/kg/min) also determines how much oxygen you can take in (and hence, get to your heart for distribution) and distribute around the body.
A lower blood pressure also reduces the need for more beats to distribute blood.

Keep in mind that as you get older your MHR (and hence, RHR etc) all come down a bit. An MHR or 205 is pretty normal for an 18 year old, whereas in a 40 year old it'll generally be down around the 180 mark or lower.

I smashed myself at the gym yesterday and got a lot of PB's for my weights. Burned over 1000 calories just during the time I was at the gym. Heart rate (using a monitor) didn't seem to get above 180's.

Well its funny you mention the exercise thing, when i was racing bikes my RHR was still in the 40's or low 50's but i'd top out at 210 bpm under stress. Then the loverly cardiologist gave me some pills to 'maybe, prevent' a hereditory condition i have (which has never been a problem in 24 years) and all of a sudden 110-120 bpm is the hardest i can go, wave goodbye to half my fitness! There is an optimum size for the heart. A problem that can happen to obese people is that there heart has to pump harder to push the blood around a greater area. This causes the heart to bulk up with muscle. As the heart bulks up it eventually gets to the point where the left ventricle starts getting smaller in volume because the muscle is taking up too much room. This results in a lower blood output volume and decreases efficiency of the heart.
