Just got back from seeing this movie at the Imax cinemas in South Bank. Anyone else catch this?

I thought it was pretty rad. The whole shaky cam thing had me pressing myself against my seat, trying to get further back from the screen, but I got used to it pretty quick. I was a bit worried, because a mate who went to the advanced screenings said you never even get to see the monster, but rest assured, there's plenty of shots.

I do recommend.

Sounds Awesome, Looks Awesome... but i'm wondering if its similar to I Am Legend in that the trailer is the whole movie. But it looks good enough to go see for sure.

I wouldn't say that, there's plenty to be seen in the film. Though, I would also say that the awesomeness and tension comes from the fact that you're seeing everything as the characters see it. You're no more informed than they are, and so the suspense is enormous, which means (for me at least), it'd be nowhere near as enjoyable to watch a second time, because all of that suspense is taken away.

At least we know the whole movie is shaky cam, not just the action scenes when all you want is for them to zoom out and stop the micro cuts so you can see what the f*** is going on.

So what you're saying is we need to look for a CAM version filmed using an image sabilizer? :)

Well, I just watched the opening scene (after the party bit) on youtube and I might say that it seems very refreshing in terms of believability. You don;t have these lame dramatic bs moments and all that; the (apparent) protagonist is walking past the cam saying whatever to the guy taking the footage as normal. Its almost as if someone really has gone and video cam'd this whole thing (though in HQ HD footage :D).

In other words, at least the footage that I saw including the start of the carnage felt very natural and real though still really epic.

While its nice to have the idea that you're IN THE THICK OF IT! You're not...you're there to watch a movie not feel like you're a toddler suffering at the hands of a vicious nanny with a chip on their shoulder because maybe you pissed on her when she tried to change you. Some movies just way overdo the shaky cam. I haven't seen this yet so I'll reserve judgement.

Saw this tonight at Southbank.
All up I thought it was pretty damn cool and generally well done. The shakey cam didn't bother me at all and really the movie would have been worthless if it wasn't done like it was.
Overall it was pretty damn suspenseful (v. fkn intense in moments) and entertaining. Worth the admission fee imo.

SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER! SPOILER!

On a further note to those who are curious ... if you stay till the end of the credits you here something along the lines of "It didn't kill it, it's still alive!"

Anyways i hope that if they do the next movie that they do it normally

Just saw this tonight. I thought it was f***ing awesome, but only because it was on a huge screen with ridiculous surround sound. On DVD it would suck balls. Characters in it were retarded, but s*** getting blown up made up for it. Nobody can survive a chopper crash. Lol statue of liberty.

actually, a chopper crash can be survived, depending on how much control the pilot maintains (ie, rate of decent).

but i thoroughly enjoyed the film, definately worth seeing at the cinema just for the insane sound effects. as for the shaky cam, i barely noticed to be honest, it was fine. that said, if you have any trouble with motion sickness, etc, maybe not on the big screen

Right at the end of the movie when they are at Coney Island you can see a big splash on the horizon in the water.

Yeah I missed that bit.. :(

Also, the bit after the credits says 'it's still alive' played in reverse.

Saw this last night and thought it was really good. First two seconds in I thought oh wow maybe the camera will make me feel sick, but then straight after that I got used to it and thought the filming was done really well.

I plan to go see this on the way home tonight - no doubt they'll ask me "any preference as to where you'd like to be seated" to which I'll be taking people advise and saying "definitely not up front".

Sorry for grave digging but I finally got around to watching this. Yay!!

Really impressed with it. I thought the shakey cam was gonna be overkill but it was done really well, not like the Bourne Ultimatum where it almost makes your eyeballs explode. The monster was damn cool as well which sorta reminded me of something outta that Stephen King movie The Mist. Another giant lizard like Godzilla would have been lame as hell.

Would have been nice to see more people being infected by the creatures, not just a silhouette of someone writhing around and then a blood splatter. Anyway, definitely recommend this if you haven't already seen it.

I think Cloverfield had that awesome factor that Signs had: a massive, cataclysmic event seen from the pointt of view of an average person. It's an interesting and refreshing change IMO. I thought another cool aspect of cloverfield was the fact that the cast was made up of small-time actors, so it helped you get caught up in it. I don't think the movie would have been anywhere near as good if you had been watching The Rock and Angelina Jolie trying to run away from a monster infront of a shakey camera.

I just watched this tonight, it was significantly better than i expected and i thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact it's given me hope for The Happenning, though I haven't liked anything M Night's done in a while.

(Hmmm... a 'saw it at the cinema' thread revived the day after the DVDRip hits the net.. i wonder..)

What, you expected that they'd stop and set up a tripod when they're running from a monster?

umm, sure...
No, I expected slight use of shaky cam to higlight stuff an then an overall polished POV by trained camera/video operators. Monster concept was ok I guess overall, just wasnn't prepared to see the show in that format completely. Not I was expecting. I ain't saying the movie was complete crap, just very dissapointing

i just watched a rip of it off a friend, wasnt surround sound though,

i saw the movie in gold class when it came out and the surround sound was what impressed me most. with out it the movie felt cheap and nasty.

I really liked it. I like how they didn't go with the usual plot formula for natural disaster/invasion movies where the government doesn't believe the expert until it is TOO LATE.

Wouldn't be suprised to see a sequel of the same events from a different POV.

That was my first thought as soon as I finished watching it. Watched it today and I really enjoyed it, and I didn't have any problems at all with the camera making me sick or giving me headaches or whatever. Maybe it helps watching it on the small screen instead of at the cinema?

What is sposed to be said at the end of the credits btw? I listened to it a few times and it just sounds like "Fail monster" to me.

That'd be an interesting concept for a 'sequel' (no really - I can't think of another movie which has tried that).

Ah, a quick check on wikipedia reveals that the voice at the end only makes sense if you play it backwards.

Watched this over the weekend - I quite liked it. The shakycam was necessary for the narrative - having it break out into cinematic would have been s***ty.

Fortunately they didn't overdo it - the quality of the picture was obviously much better than a handheld, and the shakiness wasn't 'real' - as noted the Bourne flick was heaps worse for this.

Quite chuffed all round with this one actually :)

oh and apparently in that ferris wheel footage at the end that ur supposed to see something drop into the ocean but i couldnt see anything cept a boat.

anybody see it?

the other thing is, the shaky cam was nothing like that shocking f***ing annoying bulls*** they do deliberately in cinematic camerawork with random zoom ins and moving the camera despite the camera being a normal film camera shot. f***ING s***s me off. Like in those telemovies of natural disasters and whatnot (like 10.5)

The shaky cam in this movie was simply coz a guy thats scared like f*** was carrying a dvcam. And it never felt (apart from the super high-res/quality of the image - which isnt too far fetched nowadays) that it was a full-on camera deliberately being shaken around. Props to the visual effects departments for managing that camera work with the visual effects/creatures.

Yeah, if you search for "Cloverfield splash" you can find videos on youtube of the splash. Most of them were s***, but I found one which zoomed right in on the area where it happens, and you can see something falling out of the sky and splashing into the water.

Apparently the viral marketing stuff revealed the object falling in the water to be a satellite, which goes down and wakes the monster from some long-arse slumber.

This is just what I've read on a few sites, I haven't actually done the viral marketing stuff to know for sure.
