I went, and you had to pay to get in, so I didn't go in. It says there are free bits, but they're lying because I had a pretty good look around and there was nothing.

i've seen most of it, do alot of work in GoMA/QAG so i cant escape it. They do 'Andy Warhol Up Late' on friday nights from 6 i think, runs like a club almost with a band on stage etc right in the middle of the gallery.

I went with the gf (I wouldn't have gone myself) and by the time I got to the end I was like

"OK I GET IT YOU'RE GAY AND YOU'RE FABULOUS AND WANT EVERYONE TO THINK YOU'RE FABULOUS."

Some of the s*** in there is just random. It was interesting but if you're in no way interested in art, don't go because you wont enjoy it.

Even if you are, the guy didn't make 20 bucks per person worth of art in his life... f*** that...

he's got the soup can, the Marylin on LSD thing... I think that's about it...

Wow. You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

CHUB - I havent been yet but definately allocate a few hours, there is a huge collection of his films as well.
Ive been told that this isnt the most in depth exhibition of his work - purely because of the magnatude of his body of work - this exhibition is more like a sampler, but still extensive.

The dude was barely an artist.

Collect all the mail you get in one month, put it in a box, and that's art.

W T F

edit: another piece is his art is the filming of guys just staring at a camera for 20 mins. like anyone is supposed to watch that homoerotic rubbish.

Wait, so I shouldn't go to the art gallery if I'm not interested in art? s*** me.

The dude charged $25,000 for a portrait and celebs lined up for it. I thought his pop art was pretty damn cool, and had a massive influence on what we see today.

Personally I think Warhol is the first and foremost the best media tart and so-so artist second. I saw his exhibit in Syd Modern art about 7 years ago and there were only a few pieces I liked. The rest most would agreed just pretentious crap. I wouldn't pay to see it again, just because there are more pieces doesn't make the exhibit any better.

Picasso Love & War 1935–1945 exhibit @ the VIC NGV in '06 on the other hand was worth very penny to fly down to see.

My Favourite would be 2002 QLD art gallery had really good exhibits from Monet, Matisse and John Peter Russell. That was probably one of the best exhibits for me. They should get more impressionist exhibits here :(

Warhol among other things was reputedly a fake... he got flunkies to do stuff then he'd badge it ... apparently

His "art" does not strike me as talented... or even insightful.
Stylised and Commercial perhaps.

ie. tell me how this is "art"

I went and saw this when I was last up your way. Some really great stuff although not all of the pieces are actually Wharhol originals. I think it's a good exhibit because it shows all the different stages he went through and the different themes and variations.

I'd aim to get there early in the day as I reckon on the weekend the line to get in would be pretty long.

It looks like some sort of military-inspired discharge.

When I saw this in the exhibit I was like "So f***en what, it's camo you jerk."

The camo design was included because it was the first time someone had taken the traditional military camo design and changed it. All the fluro camo designs from the 80s and even the girlie camo you can find on shirts now came about thru Wharhol mucking with the design.

If you go to the exhibition it's worth reading the signs and finding out a bit more about the artworks you're looking at and why they've been included. Wharhol is so popular mainly because what he did had never been done before. His works were mostly pretty groundbreaking stuff.

There are a lot of artists that do the flunky thing now. Following Andys lead no doubt.

His Art is a reflection of the world he was experiencing (and a world that hasnt changed much since). If his art seems stylised, commercial and superficial that is because it is a reflection of the people and the objects he was painting. There are a lot of modern artists that are doing stuff now that he has already covered.

All his stuff is still very relevant. It is definitely worth checking out so you can form your own opinion.

The collection is HUUGE. Lots of paintings, screen prints, time capsules and videos.

He did some stuff for Saturday night live
