From SMH

MOST current plasma TV models would be banned from sale in Australia as early as October next year under onerous mandatory energy requirements recommended in a report commissioned by the Federal Government.

The consulting firm Digital CEnergy, which prepared the report for the Government's Australian Greenhouse Office, also recommends a second tier of even tougher restrictions that would then ban almost all current LCD models from the market in April 2011.

Sounds a bit crazy. Plasma TVs do use a heap of power though..

Banning seems a bit extreme, they should just tax the f*** out of them so they're not worth buying unless you're stupid rich.

i guess the idea behind banning is to make the vendors engineer them to use less power.

nah
if anything the title should be about those wanting to purchase current technology in 4-5 years, not those owning current technology now

no. it is of interest to people with the gear now, not just those looking to buy them in 4-5 years.

this is as stupid as the pointless advert where the sutfer saves the world from global warming destruction by showering for one minute less each shower.

why is it of interest with the gear now? if you already have purchased one you're fine,. aren't they only banning the sale of them?

no, they use more power when displaying a fully white screen. however, normal use, ie, watching movies, tv, etc, it's much lower than peak

I don't know what post you're reading, but the one I read mentioned banning LCDs more than 3 years from now, as opposed to plasmas being next year.

I got a 42" plasma.
Looks nice.

Don't know why people are crying about power consumption though.
Let's figure out our WATER crisis before we start giving a f*** about burning an extra 1g of coal per plasma tv imo.

So they are going to come around knocking on everyones door demanding to come in and see if they have a plasma/lcd that is on the banned list?.. yeah thats believable.

or they start targeting high power consumers for having plasmas, wouldn't that be a shame for anyone with a plasma in their hydro-grow house

non-issue. by the time the legislation comes into play the manufacturers will have stepped up no worries.

I'd hate to see the power consumption on my f***off big CRT.. luckily electricity is a commodity and I pay for what I use.

Um... It says they would be banned from sale... It doesn't say that people who have them would have to get rid of them.

also, as erik said, where as an LCD uses the same amount of power constantly, plasma's use a different amount of power depending on whats on the screen.

wow this is an awesome way to combat greenhouse gases/high power consumption.... ban lcd tv's!

will be f***ing ridiculous having to go to a blackmarket to get lcd tv's..... thats f***ing bulls***, as if they can ban a type of tv.. so,in the future, while the rest of the world enjoys their biological bending tv's (which, for the sake of my rant, uses the same amount of power as a plasma) we miss out because it uses too much power.

if they are allowed to do this, imagine what else they will b able to ban... computers with more than 2 monitors, high end computers with large power supplies etc...

they have banned the iridescent lightbulb from sale already. it was only a matter of time before they went after other power wasting items.

There won't be a blackmarket. Manufacturers will have to come up with less power hungry ways of lighting the units. So future LCD/plasma panels will have to meet the "power standard" that the magical power consumption governing group has specified.

I don't know why people are saying that current owners should be concerned... theres no feasible way to enforce that kind of s*** (when it eventually comes into play)

i'm pretty sure it's a manufacturer ban... coz my local bigw has shelves of incandescent bulbs that are still available. also reasonably sure that the ban on incandescent bulbs was partially because of the greater fire risk over fluorescents.

As covered in another thread, power generation consumes a lot of water because most of our power comes form coal stations.

agreed.. I'm too afraid to turn on my aircon, but a big f***off ~40" montior doesn't really compute.

Because the fat people will need to consume a lot of water to keep hydrated while exercising to power your phat TV
