Bought a Netgear WG311 PCI adapter for $26. Unfortunately it's a load of bollocks that barely picks up a signal. My laptop from the same spot gets 100% reception.

Can anyone recommend a decent one? Willing to pay ~$50.

Cheers

I recently helped setup the neighbour's home network and he used a D-Link USB adapter which picked up his router broadcast from the other end of the house perfectly. Umart sells them for around your budget. The 108mbps is $55 if you're planning on sharing over LAN id go that one.

I would recommend going with the netgear rangemax range. put them in at my gf's place and works perfectly.

How far away are you from the router? I have 2 netgear 108mbps cards, wg311T and wg511T and they both pick up a decent signal all the way down the other end of my house. They also pick up some random router somewhere in my area from another house. I call user error, or electronic interference.

the WG311 v3 is the biggest piece of poo ever. I have 3 here that don't even make a good paperweight.

I recommend an Asus Client card if you can find 1

Gigabit Cables > Power over Ether > Two Tin Cans connected by String > Carrier Pidgeon > Snails using their antennae/feelers twitching in Morse Code is better than Wireless...

WG311v3 here too, works flawlessly in Fedora w/ ndiswrapper, but sucks big time in Vista. Stupid chipset means you can't even use it for hacking too, which is no fun :(
