I am looking at upgrading my computer very soon (around September). I am wanting to buy the Dell 27" LCD monitor. However at the moment i want to buy a nice smaller monitor now and have dual monitors once i get my new computer..

My question is i know the 27" Vertically is 363.60mm (14.3 inches).

What i want is the smaller monitor to be the same size vertically but not widescreen.... Would a normal 19" be the right size vertically?

use Pythagoras' Theorem. You know the height you want for the non-widescreen (363.60) and you know the width since the ratio is 4:3, so use a^2 + b^2 = c^2 with c being the hypotenuse.

Nope.

Look at this picture below, now imagine the 27" being taller and wider than anything you see there:

do what the guys here do at work, and prop up their smaller monitor on books or something, next to the widescreen so it's the same level

f*** getting a 20" instead of a 27" just cause your other monitor won't be as tall

i think you'd be more looking at a 24" normal not a 20.

yeh but a 20" will be closer then 19"

Looking at the Samsung 20" 1200 x 1600 looks like it will do the trick!

quoted for incorrectness. with widescreen you get more room & the resolution ratio is set so that the picture isn't squashed. for graphical design widescreen rules. 1680x1050 /,,/

You'll lose pixel-count if you go from 5:4 to widescreen at the same diagonal monitor size (e.g 19"), but the widescreen is significantly better suited for [widescreen] movies, resulting in thinner letterboxing than the 5:4 setup and hence a bigger picture.

Squashing? Haha wtf are you on. Probably just trolling.

Widescreens own. I wish I had one, but already have an expensive 5:4.

i like my 1600x1200. I don't like 1680x1050, its just a backward step i find. i hardly do anything that needs a widescreen. i would like a 20" or 22" non-widescreen monitor.

what i mean by everything is squashed is, if you are say playing a game which doesnt support the native res, or widescreen, then like your scope on the sniper rifle is not a circle but an oval.

exactly that why i will go out and my 20" non widescreen and a 27" widescreen..

So old games that dont support widescreen i can use my 20" and games that support widescreen i can use my 27"

simple!

Btw, current vidcard drivers can run 1:1 pixel mapping so that you just get black borders in non-widescreen games - the intended aspect ratio is maintained. Or you can stretch, whatever you prefer.

Spook: Almost unbelievably, lots of current games STILL don't support widescreen properly.

but if you are like me that still play some old games.... AOE Star craft and other crazy games like carmageddon and uniball non widescreen will be great....

Plus when i upgrade my computer i will be able to play games that support dual montior support like most of the new games... world of conflict does and u can put the map on one monitor and play on the other >>>>>> this will be FTW!!!!!

Plus most websites look better on non widescreen... unless your widescreen roates... but on the 27" the monitor doesnt rotate :(

i think the 1:1 pixel mapping is done with the forceware nvidia drivers? i had a brief experiment with it when i got my widescreen lcd but later realised that i don't really play the games that don't support widescreen n gave it a miss.
all i know is i like 1280x1024 and 1600x1200

already you need two different monitors to display those resolutions correctly ... as 1280x1024 is 5:4 ratio & 1600x1200 is 4:3 ratio.

from memory starcraft only runs in 640x480 duzznt it? thats gonna look like arse on any big monitor that isn't 4:3 ratio. (prolly on them too).
