Topic: Wireless networking problem

So I just moved, and I'm having problems with our new network setup. Here's a diagram:

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/9332/networkdiagramuz9.jpg

So we have a router/modem combo connected to the net (which isn't wireless), then a wireless router connected to that. I'm using the wireless network since I can't get a cable between this room and the router. Anyway, while it all works fine and dandy for browsing/msn/downloads etc, I can't connect to online games. When I try to connect to any online games the router s***s itself and needs a restart. Will setting up port forwarding fix this? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can get the model numbers etc if that helps.

hey mate :)

more info would be great. Also, is this the same configuration that you were using in your last place, or is it a new solution that was required by moving house?

(also, my sympathies on the whole moving thing.. I'm doing that next week and am fully expecting it to blow goats :()

Cheers,

you got ethernet over power there? i spent hundreds of £ on f***ing wifi soultions in my new flat, new routers, heaps of wifi pci cards. all had different issues.

got 2 ethernet over power adaptors, plugged em both in, they found each other, and i was done. 2second job.

have heard a couple of other people say exactly the same thing as mooby - term and saint both dumped wireless for those ethernet over power adaptors

I've got some cheap junky belkin wireless thing I got about 2 years ago and it's been flawless even with the variety of wireless nics we have in this house, it just sits there always working. I'm dreading when it decides to pack it in cos after hearing all the hassles people have with wireless, replacing it doesn't sound like fun

You can try boosting the signal with one of these. Yes it's cheap and made of cardboard + tinfoil but I made a couple and they do work very well on my wrt router.

Put setup the Cable Modem/Router such that the Wireless Router's IP is in the DMZ.

OK the routers are:
dg834 v2
wgt624 v2

An example of a game that screws it up would be WoW. I can log in, load up a toon, get into the game but everybody is naked, nothing moves and I can't interract with anything. The net will then be borked and the router will require a restart (the wireless one).

*Bump*
Also thought I should mention I'm using a Netgear WG311v3 PCI card. I don't think it's a problem with the signal, because the signal strength is always at 'excellent', sometimes drops to 'very strong'.

are you using windows s*** built in wireless crap that isn't worth the toilet paper you wipe your arse with or the netgear client which actually manages to stay connected for more than 30 freaking seconds without popping up "OMFG NETWORK f***ING FOUND" every 5 minutes?

(can you tell the built in windows wireless config pisses me off?)

I'm using the netgear software. So far I'm pretty impressed with it.

sadly I find the exact opposite to be true.

the wgt624 is a pain in the arse to get fully working with the Billion modems I'm finding. Setting all the the ips manually gets me around the problem.

hope this helps

Sounds like the nat table is screwing up if it needs a restart of the modem. Also check the modem to make sure someone hasn't decided to set up some dongs firewall settings or just forward a bunch of port ranges to themselves.

dynalink rta1025 modem here, wireless everyone in the house is happy gaming and all. Dunno what I did when I set it up but it just works great for everything.

Are you sure your firewall in XP is allowing access for the games? oh and also in the router/modem?

The main router/modem is perfectly fine, it's just the wireless router that connects to this that needs a restart. I'm guessing it's just the NAT tables getting hammered, would port forwarding fix this? I'll give it a trial and error in the morning : /

odd, both my wireless pc's, if I use the windows client, every few minutes it'll pop up with that little balloon "wireless network detected" and proceed to tell me how it's connected or whatever else windows tells you. I'll be in the middle of watching a video or dvd or something then BAM! I'm staring at the desktop telling me it's found my bloody wireless.

Maybe it's a limitation of the tcp/ip connections option? I know on my wrt I can make it accept more or less open connections at a time & increase/decrease the timeout of each connection. You're actually meant to change those values if you use P2P apps or else they do the same thing, overload the connection table & shag the router over. I know you said wow and not p2p but maybe it's the same problem for both?

if u think its the nat tables, turn of DHCP server on the wireless router.
and plug the modem into a lan port on there router, instead of WAN port

let the modem do the NAT/DHCP.

i have a Wireless Router with ADSL modem in lounge room but the cordless phones are there (no otherphone outlets), so i have WIFI onthat turned off.

Then via ethernet cable(ethernet ports in walls to some rooms) have a Wireless Router connected in another room, which DHCP etc is all turned off.

wireless computers connect to the second wireless router, bet get all details and use first wireless router as gateway, thus the second wireless router does nothing but bridge the connections together (not technically a bridge but u get what i mean)

Update: I only have problems in high traffic areas of WoW, I can log into a quiet noob area.

Try setting your PC as the DMZ

I think the guy above is on the money, too many forwards, do what he said, disable DHCP on the second one, and run Modem/Router --> Lan port on Second Wireless Router
