Hey, i've just been asked to get some info on ways to get our 2 offices (caboolture & underwood) connected with a 100mbit+ connection Do any of you know if this possible in these locations (fibre optic? another way?) - and if so, what has to be done to get it setup or who set's it up? And how costly is it? Thx for info |

I think expensive is an understatement.. it would cost a f***ing metric s*** tonne of money to run 100Mbit over that distance.
Your best chance is to contact someone like PIPE Networks and see what they can offer. We got a price for a 10Mbit tail from Park Rd to their data centre in the valley and it was going to cost about $3500/mth.. the costs between Caboolture and Underwood would be insane. Sounds like the people asking require a cluepon. last edited by TicMan at 14:44:43 17/Apr/07 |

VPN What does VPN have to do with setting up a physical 100Mbps link? :) |

nothing, i think he just randomly pressed 3 letters.
The scary thing for me is, my work pay for two dedicated links between brisbane and sydney (one redundant) and they're only 24mbit... (this is through telstra) I'd hate to think what that would cost. |

You should contact one of the guys at PIPE - they released a "dark fibre" network that connects Bris->Syd->Melb and from the prices we got they were pretty cheap.
I recall something like $2000ex GST for 10Mbit and $10,000 for 100mbit between PIPEs data centres in each city then $x for the tails into your offices. |

Legally anything which goes off the premises has to go through a licensed carrier (eg Telstra or Optus). Strictly speaking you can't even run cable between two adjacent buildings (as the previous building occupier had done here - they had FDDI going through the wall).
And as we all know, licensed carriers will charge an arm and a leg for that kind of bandwidth. |

launch your own satellite and have it boosting over brisbane constantly and just run a direct link via satellite
do it. |

Where did the 100mbit+ figure come from? I assume to make such a comment you have done capacity planning etc? This bandwidth requirement wasn't pulled from someones arse was it?

How much for data transfer? No data fees, it's your own dedicated circuit to pump as much data over as you want. They deliver a Layer2 ethernet tail to you and you do the rest. |

(this is through telstra)out of curiosity - wouldnt speeds between 10-24mbit be able to be done by adsl2? (i mean it wouldnt be direct, but using a secured vpn)? last edited by Jerry at 16:13:42 17/Apr/07 |

You can't guarantee quality of service with ADSL anything. Aside from being Async (which sucks) you can't rely on this for anything critical. The idea of having a dedicated link is just that, they're dedicated to _you_ so you can do whatever you want with it. edit:
I thought it was Microwave link...not too sure. last edited by Opec at 16:26:37 17/Apr/07 |

PIPE don't supply interwebs, you have to organise that through a mob like Powertel or Telstra and have it terminated at your office or data centre.

You can pump all the data you want but it won't be routed anywhere useful unless you buy internets or peer :) I was shown around inside PIPE's data-centre in the city and yeah, very impressive and professional. last edited by parabol at 16:47:04 17/Apr/07 |

it would cost a fair bit to get implemented but i don't think the ongoing costs are all that much and it also depends on the amount of fault tolerance required for the link. Providers that provide this kind of service would include Telstra, Uecomm (an Optus subsidiary) and Powertel. I think most others would just be reselling one or more of the above providers infrastructure. |

Plenty of ISPs do business grade DSL ( which often includes SHDSL over fibre ) for exactly what you're talking about. Generally you'd be looking at the cost to run fibre ( or similar last mile tech ) from the nearest spliceable fibre to each building. From there you're renting the bandwidth over the fibre without even touch the internet.
It will be expensive yes, but possibly not as expensive as you might think. Talk to iSeek or TelcoBlue or someone along those lines. |

Do you have a link/info for this supposed 10mbit all-you-can-eat for $2k, cause that's too cheap. Internode's IBC is in the region of $4k a month for unlimited on an E1. |

Get 2 100mbit wireless routers, a satellite dish big enough to capture signals from deep space and a 400dB signal amp & stick one at each office, aim the dish at each other and go nuts.

you do realise 10mbit is only ~3.3TB a month a FULL capacity...

Do you have a link/info for this supposed 10mbit all-you-can-eat for $2k, cause that's too cheap. It was a quote from a sales guy at PIPE. That's only 10Mbit between PIPE's DC in Sydney and their DC in Brisbane. If your not terminating the links in either then you'll have to pay for a tail out to your premises. |

if they want a decent connection between offices you could look at running multiple DSL2+ lines if possible, and using an ADSL bandwidth aggregator (I believe netcomm makes something of the type) to join and load balance over a few different connections :)
this has multiple benefits if you don't take all the same provider in that if one of your providers goes down, you can still be online however slow, with the backup provider :) anyhows, I've probably explained it like ass, but have a look through netcomm website on the product... last edited by Moo at 22:27:27 18/Apr/07 |

I agree with Moo get a few phone lines and get ADSL 2+ but u probably dont have ADSL 2+ in caboolture so get ISP that has 512/512 like INternode get 4 lines which will equal 2000k upload and download. Get that at caboolture and see if you can get ADSL2+ at underwood, which u probably can!!!
Or can do this! http://www.internode.on.net/shdsl/ last edited by TiT at 14:25:33 19/Apr/07 |

Business grade services are quality guaranteed- the bandwidth is yours. That's why the price is so high, otherwise you might as well just use consumer grade plans.
