Hey guys,

the missus installed IE7 (one of the release candidates) a little while ago and everything was just plain super

until a few days ago, when she lost the ability to go right click -> open in new tab

now ctrl and clicking still works, but there is no open in new tab option in the right click menu

uninstalling it and installing it again (even the latest release) hasnt fixed it

any ideas?

The IE context menu could be borked, and this menu might have been stuffed by a plugin?

The easiest way I find is just mouse-wheel click on a link, and it will open in a new tab. One cool (yet buggy?) thing I've found, is that you can right click on a javascript:function() link, and open that in a new tab. Thats something FF doesn't allow me to do (in ff2 that is).

okay, she uses a trackball... so no mousewheel click :(

googlebar is the only plugin she has installed, but it was worked for quite a while before that.

quite an odd problem - I couldn't see anything obvious in the advanced settings that would turn this feature back on :/

have you tried scanning your system with something like Spyware Doctor? The Mrs might have something there.

as an added note - we did a fresh install on little-bros PC on Friday night (with IE7 and Firefox 2). It took him less than an 90 mins to junk up his system with spyware. Not happy Jan :(

saved by Nortons Ghost yet again =)

I am also experiencing the same problem, the option was there when I first installed it but has since dissappeared :o

edit: It still works for image links, but not text links.

Friend of mine found the fix for this problem.

Hopefully its the same, we have found its only for PC's on a domain but hey, its worth a shot.

Start -> Run ->gpedit.msc

Then go Computer Configuration ->Administrative Templates -> Windows Compondents -> Internet Explorer

In there it will have "Turn off tabbed browsing" and it will be set to not configured. Set it to "Disabled" and you should be good to go!

Let me know if this helps.

hey david and tayfun ;p

umm, i never used control but always shift-clicked to open in new window in IE

i haven't installed ie7 yet but have you attempted it to see if the shortcut works? if not, give it a go - seems an unusual oversight to remove such an option ..

edit: nm, i see you're only looking at it from a wanting the right click option - but hey anyway ;p

No, XP Home doesnt include the group policy editor :(

Okay, I think I found the correct key in the registry (again, this is on XP Pro, but it should work for home)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Tabbed Browsing

Hopefully the Enabled value is set to 0. All you need to do is set it to 1.

If that doesnt work, you could try this if you have access to Windows XP Pro files.

Windows XP Home does not include GPEDIT; XP Home users can apparently run this program if they have access to files from an XP Pro (or possibly Win 2000?) installation, by doing the following:

* Copy the files gpedit.dll and fde.dll from \WINDOWS\System32 on the XP Pro machine to \WINDOWS\System32 on the XP Home machine.
* From a command prompt issue the following commands on the XP Home machine: regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\gpedit.dll

* regsvr32 C:\WINDOWS\System32\fde.dll Open the Microsoft Management Console (mmc.exe) and select File->Add/Remove Snap-in... Then click Add. Select the Group Policy snap-in from the list of installed snap ins.

You can now edit the Group Policy on the local machine. But XP Home doesn't support the same feature set as XP Pro, so the policies you are looking for might be missing.
