for the tl;dr crowd, where can I buy a low profile amp, or decent computer speakers?

At the moment I'm using an old kenwood hifi for my computer speakers, but it's rather large and annoying. I want to swap to either a low profile amp & keep my existing speakers, or just get a set of computer speakers. Point of note, I NEED bass/trebble controls because my sound card doesn't have any. I could replace the sound card, but I want to get rid of my old stereo anyway and I'm not going to buy another sound card as well as speakers/amp so don't suggest it.

I've been to JB & they don't seem to have much in the way of low profile amps, where would be a good place to go looking? All it needs is volume, bass, trebble and a headphones plug, so a rackmount amp from a component system would probably do just fine (if I could find one).

Second option is a set of computer speakers, been to clive peters/harvey norman and from what they have it seems that no one makes speakers with bloody bass/trebble controls anymore or speakers with headphones capabilities. Is there anywhere that sells a large range of these things that isn't an online store?

i got a pair of logitec x320's i thikn they are called.. very nice.

you logitech boys know if there's any bass/trebble controls on your speakers, along with a headphones plug? From what I saw in harveys/clive peters I can find sets with one or the other but none had both :(

Seriously just get a 2nd hand SBLive 5.1 card, I'm sure someone on here would probably have one lying around gathering that valuable dust.

They are worth next to nothing these days. Then get a set of decent speakers as well.

yes, I need headphones though, as I said in the original post. I looked at the dse amp, it would be perfect and I would have bought it IF it had headphones.

it has a bass control. and it has a headphone jack aswell. for 210$ is what i got mine for. you might be able to get a better deal though.

Head unit has bass/treble control (awesome sub) an is capable of 7.1

They can also upmix your 5.1/6.1 to 7.1 if so desired
No digital though which I was really dissappointed with as I misread the product branding when making my decision to purchase.

I bought one years ago its sits under my dvd burner in my computer it takes the power from the pc's power supply.
It has a microphone and headphone jacks in the front it also has an easy to use equilser with mute button and master volume control.

you just loop your soundcard and plug some cheep pc speakers in and away you go

you guys are totally misreading the thread. I'm grateful for all the suggestions, but I'm after PLACES that sell amps/speakers as I have a specific need that is probably slightly if not totally off norm. I said in the first line of the OP that I need advice on PLACES that sell stuff. Like JB or todds hi-fi, or even a dedicated music store somewhere that sells starter rackmount amps.

Logitech would be my recommendation. I'm not sure of which particular model, but they're all quite good sound from all the $150+ speakers :)

I have a set of Logitech Z-5500's.

Very good, the control unit has bass and treble controls, as does the remote control.

Umart have them at a very competitive price ($445), that's where I got mine.

Sorry I thought you wanted something to easily control your sound coming out of your pc.

I have a set of logitech z680's and logitech x5500's and both have what you are looking for. I can't confirm if the cheaper models do or not.
