Hey guys,
Having a slight issue with some new memory I bought as the extent of my hardware knowledge is limited. I have an asus p4p800 socket 478 motherboard. (supports up to 4gb ddr 333/400 etc, and is dual channel capable). I have 2 512 sticks in there already and i went and bought another 512 stick from the disc shop. Its a standard 512 ddr400 pc3200 stick. Only problem is my computer gets stop errors on start up with this new memory installed. It just keeps resetting after the windows xp load screen. I tried both slots but still the same problem. Anyone have any ideas why it won't work. (I am ruling out the possibilty of faulty memory for the time being). |

check your bios for the voltage and timing settings of the ram. also take out the 2 old sticks and try the new stick by itself might be DOA

http://www.memtest.org/
Run it through memtest just as a single stick in your mobo, if it fails ram = teh poo, take it back... if not then start trying other things. |

err, disable dual channel support in the BIOS as you appear to only have 3 sticks of ram?

Pretty much every mobo I have seen lately will auto detect the number of sticks of RAM and adjust accordingly, the majority do (if they are anygood :P) still I haven't seen em all.
Hrm p4p... thats kinda old... dunno on that one *shrug* |

Were you running dual channel before ? I don;t think you can with 3 sticks, ie: You can't run 1 in dual channel and whack in a 3rd for s***s and giggles, try the other slots first.

Of course you can't run dual chan with 3 modules, it will only ever work with an even number of memory modules.
However it *should* just automagically detect you now are using 3 and default to single channel. Like I said before I have never ever had a problem with a board not doing this automatically by itself with an odd number of modules. |
