Ok, this shouldn't be as bad as the other week but it looks like from 10am to 1pm today (Friday) QR will be striking once again. With luck this won't mess anyone up too bad.

I think it means that they average a 320hour load over an 8 week period. I.e. they get worked like a vietnamese prostitute some weeks and forgotten like an unwanted stepchild for the remaining weeks.

I just don't understand this situation - and I probably don't know enough about what's going on. The only way they should be striking about this is if

They were working 37.5 or 38 hours a day and that was increaseed to 40 without warning but the pay remained the same. If that happened, then striking is probably reasonable.

If it's always been 40 hours and they've just got a beef because other states only work 37 then SUCK IT UP OR QUIT!

If they've had the hours increased to 40 and they've been paid for that extra time then SUCK IT UP OR QUIT!

Striking is such a load of crap, it's the same as chucking a tantrum as a kid if your mum says you have to wash the dishes before TV.

i think you will find they want to work 40 hours per week, every week. As present they only work at 160hr 4-week cycle meaning they could do 60hrs, 20hrs, 50hrs, 30hrs.

Yah I've seen people at QR have to work 12 + hours a day and then have nothing for 4 days at a time... screws with your sleeping schedule that sort of thing.

QR and the AFLUE been negotiating for a new agreement for traincrew employees. In an information circular posted on their website part of their claims include:

The AFULE and the RTBU identified core issues as critical to be identical in each agreement, those being:-

* Hours of Work - AFULE is seeking a 38 hour week to be reflected in both agreements.


* Traincrew Base Rate of Pay - AFULE is seeking identical increases of the base rate of pay in both agreements.


* Superannuation - AFULE is seeking the same calculation for superannuation in both agreements.


* Length of Traincrew Cycle - AFULE is seeking a 4 week work cycle in both agreements.


* Penalty Rates - AFULE is seeking any additional penalty rates to be the same across both agreements.


* Payment of Leave Types - AFULE is seeking identical application across both agreements for payment of Long Service Leave, Jury Leave and Sick Leave as well as any additional public holidays.


* Traincrew Recruitment and Selection and Transfer Guidelines - AFULE is seeking the current application across PSG and QRN to allow the current practice of Traincrew transfers.

At this point in time, Unions are still waiting responses from QRN and PSG on the majority of the core issues.


If they are still negotiating and no certified agreement exists at present, their industrial action would be legal in order to leverage their claims.

QR also issued a media release stating that the unions were trying to double dip in this claim as employees had already been granted a 38 ordinary hour working week in 1990 where the remaining 2 hours were to be paid as overtime. Now the unions seek to be paid 40 hours wages for 38 hours of work, according the CEO of QR.

I guess the truth lies somewhere in between as is usually the case in these matters.

They want a 38 hour week because thats what the rest of us QR employees get, and it's not 38 hours every week we get, it simply means you work 3 x 40 hour weeks and then you get one day off in the 4th. Which is what I get.

This isn't what they signed up for, the unions came to an agreement with management, which management are now backing out of, and instead of agreeing to terms the unions will settle with, management are offering less.

You obviously have no idea what you're talking about, Strikes are one of the most effective ways the Drivers/Guards can get their point across to management. They've been arguing and holding meeting for months and months and months, and finally they've decided to show their muscle....no drivers = no trains...what better threat to those in charge is that to show they're serious? Do you have any better suggestions?

teachers,nurses,railworkers,etc pull this s*** all the time ,givin no thought to the effect on others. its piss poor,every over type of worker manages to work out terms and conditions rarely striking.f***em sackem its a monkey job anyways can train others to do (wheres old joe when ya need him)
