You know those ones that are credit cards, but instead of using credit, they use the actual money in your account? What are they actually called (I tried debit card but all I got were normal keycard type things) and do you know if commonwealth offers them? I looked around their site but couldn't find anything.
Or did I just dream these magical cards up? |

You didnt dream the actual card itself up, just that you had more than $100 to put in one.

They sort of defeat the purpose of having "credit". CC ftw.

They sort of defeat the purpose of having "credit". CC ftw.I disagree - some people don't want to manage a credit card, some people can't get one. These people are sometimes at a disadvantage when it comes to making purchases because sometimes a credit card is required in order to make one. These cards can make it possible for these people to make purchases in these instances. |

Say you wanted to buy something that was 5k and you had this Debit VISA card, didn't have the funds in your account but needed it that instance? What do you do ? Having a CC is probably a good way of learning to manage credit and its associated risks. It has it's up and down's so I spose it depends on the persons needs. |

These days just about anyone can get a CC.that wasn't my only point though - I also said that some people don't want the responsibility of managing one. Regardless, even if just about anyone can get one, there's still some people who can't. These debit-credit visa ones may still be an option though, making them able to make purchases where a credit card is normally required. |

Yeah just pop into a St. George Bank. Takes like 10-15 mins to set up and you'll be sweet as. Suncorp also do it, but the fees seem overly ambitious. The St. George one has either a $6 a month fee or no fee at all if you are a full-time student.

I have both and prefer the debit cause you don't have to muck around with paying CC bills or keeping track of expenditures.

if u want one(cc) get one, if u dont, dont..
some ppl just shouldnt have one thats a given, for those ppl- the debit visa. simple i personally find cc's useful AND helpful. 45 day interest free for those slightly out of budget moments and honestly interest just isnt that much. im with anz, and honestly havnt noticed any interest charges more than 3 dollars.. but i hadly go over the 45 day peroid anyway. im cashing in some reward points for some tickets to the movies, only thing im not fond of is they keep sending out preaproved gold card letters and even ring up from time to time the last time they rang me at work so i went off at em and they havnt rang back since. still get the letters :S a cc to me isnt worth 80 bucks yearly fee. |

i've had a credit card for about 2 years now. got it when i was 19 as a form of credit line because i didn't pay rent, or for my mobile phone etc. it's been good. not once in two years have i paid a cent of interest and i use it all the time. it also gets me out of those sticky situations where one week i might have a small pay check but i know the next week will be a big one. the most important thing is that you don't get out of control with them.
