Just a reminder to anyone out there with furry little pets to check them for paralysis ticks regularly during the next few months.
My 6 month old puppy got struck down by one and after quite an emotional 24hrs it looks like we got him to the vet in time and he'll be spending Christmas with us if the vet allows him to go home. Syptoms to watch out for: - Diarohea - Loss of appetite & no longer drinks - Sleepiness & acting very lethargic - Ability to stand diminishes, the back legs usually stop working - Strong coughing/wheezing noises |

Our cat recently lost control of his back legs and was acting pretty damn lethargic, but it was a snake bite in the end and he's good now. Sorry to hear about your puppy :(

How big was the tick? About half a finger nail or so.. scary thing is I searched 2-3 times and my GF searched about 5 times and neither of us found it. The vet had a feel around and found it within minutes and it was blatantly obvious. Posted by TicMan, OH THE IRONY! NOOB |

I found a tick in my dog once and it had to go live in the animal hospital for 3 days, and it is a sad grim place indeed all the animals seem to be crying

Another symptom to look out for in dogs is a change in their "voice" when barking. My dog got a tick about 12 months ago. Came home one day after work and figured she was just spooked by something since she wouldn't come out from the garden. Realised something was wrong when she wouldn't come out to have her dinner.
It's amazing how quickly the vet can find the tick[s] with just a few quick runs of the hands around the pet. We couldn't find the cause of my dog's paralysis. The vet found it in about 20 seconds. Man, that thing was fat. damn, i misread the thread as "paralysis tricks" :( I must admit, that's the exact same reason why I viewed this thread initially. |
