4WD RUNS OVER SLEEPING BEACH GOERS

Two British backpackers have been injured after being run over by a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle while sleeping on a beach on Fraser Island off south-east Queensland.

A 25-year-old man has suffered head injuries while a young woman has minor injuries.

The two were part of a group of backpackers sleeping in sand dunes near Happy Valley when the accident happened early this morning.

Both received medical aid from a police officer before being transported to Hervey Bay Hospital by rescue helicopter.

Rescue helicopter pilot Craig Meacham says it was an unusual accident.

"He had been sleeping there with his girlfriend on the beach, he didn't realise there was a little 4WD track in the sand dune, a vehicle has come up over the top of the sand dune and hit him," he said.

"He's sustained head injuries and possible broken shoulder or arm and some lacerations."

yeah rev they slept on in a beach enterance trail or something similar... another deserving darwin

this nearly happened at a party i was at up the coast once somewhere in the middle of nowhere. was one of those get maggot and go sleep in a car/tent type parties. some guy was sleeping in the back of his 4x4, the ground was at a funny angle so he turned it around. one of the girls wakes up the next day and her tent (which she didn't sleep in) was missing. eventually found it under the wheels of the 4x4.

We need to ban soccer mums and people who never take there 4wd out of the city from buying 4wd's. They are just a menace on the roads.

Two Bitish campers woke to find out they had been sleeping in the path of a homosexual man's automobile. Although the two campers were not injured, the Rav4 was reduced to a twisted hunk of metal. Onlookers said it was "just like the Rav4 had hit a brick wall". Pieces of charred plastic were found at the scene, some more than two hundred meteres from where the accident took place.

you'd have to be pretty ignorant to goto sleep on the dunes around happy valley... it's like the biggest touristy area of frazer island & there are signs everywhere warning about beach traffic. also the ranger dudes warn you about stuff like that when you get your camping permits.

Well, considering they are British backpackers, im sure the 'head injuries' actually means 'they got sand in their eyes' and 'possible broken shoulder or arm' is so f***ing vague, they probably jumped up in shock of having sand in their faces that they fell down the dune. The Pohms need to be punished for sleeping on angles anyway.

I'm sure the minor lacerations are from when the husband bashed his wife.
