OK, so I'm staying with my family down in Sydney leading up to Christmas. I don't know what people in Queensland are being told, but this all started brewing up last week some time. According to the news, a couple of youths of a particular ethnic group assaulted some life guards. Apparently the locals were getting angry about ethnic gangs causing problems in the area, and the assaults on the life guards were the trigger. However, this info has all come from our reliable afternoon news teams (/sarcasm) so I don't know how true this is.

I haven't witnessed any of the mobs or violence first hand because my family lives in a posh area on the other side of Sydney. However, even this far away I think the feelings are the same. All the locals I have spoken to about this matter feel that the events in cronulla are long overdue. Even this far away from Cronulla in a pretty safe and tidy area of Sydney there seems to be an awareness and hatred of ethnic gangs.

I don't know what the situation is right now, but I heard another large mob was forming up tonight. A couple of my mum's work mates live in Cronulla, and told us that they couldn't sleep last night because there was a large mob near their house and they were affraid of what they might do. People are capable of horrific things when they assume a mob mentallity. Look at what happened to Nanking in WWII.

I really don't trust news sources, so I figured it would be good if anybody with any eyewitness info or heard some info from family/friends could add some info. Please refrain from posting anything racist.

I live in Chippendale (Inbetween Central station and Redfern station), I feel s*** loads safer walking around Redfern at the moment than I would being in crounlla/brighton le sands/maroubra etc.
