Topic: Need a _decent_ industrial-grade (A)DSL modem

Ok, here's the deal: Quite frankly I am getting the s***s with the consumer-grade crap that I have to deal with when trying to diagnose issues with client's DSL access.

What I need is a _DECENT_ industrial-grade (A)DSL modem that provides _VERY_ extensive information about what it is doing. I want a modem that logs each and every single stage of the link negotiation and authentication processes. The current consumer-grade ones I have are pretty pisspoor in regards to logging, and the netgear firewall routers we deploy don't cut it when it comes to diagnosing exactly where the fault lies.

Anyone know of one? Preferrably available from a domestic IT wholesaler.

there isnt anything such as "industrial grade" since adsl is something an "industry" would use, anyhow, ive got an old 711CE modem that does all that youre asking ie. liny sync, ATM status and all that bulls***

I have my old Telstra Alcatel speed touch 'Home' adsl modem lying round here somewhere..never had any probs with it. I did use a Rasppoe setup with it so I dont even know if it can handle all the log on needs you outline. Failing that I have a Billion 5100 adsl router with 4 ports that has worked excellently since buying it. You can grab them for under $100 in some places. Works a treat on my little home network as well..it is web based interface and does all the loggin for you.

If you want the Alcatel, make me an offer.

By industrial-grade, I mean as in its built to a very high standard and is designed purely for technical diagnostics. For instance, I've had problems at sites before that have been very very wierd - one client had ADSL with Telstra (as do 99.9% of our clients) which would receive email (pop3), download and upload files to FTP, www was as fast as could be expected on 256/128 - everything worked fine EXCEPT SMTP traffic. No matter what I did (including replacing their h/w firewall, their router, their DSL modem) it would not work. So I got Telstra involved (and by this time the client was extremely pissed off) and after forcing the issue with them, they eventually replaced the port in the exchange and magically SMTP started working again. Go figure.

I appreciate the offer of sale but virtually all of our clients are supplied with the very same modems :). They're generally pretty good but don't quite do everything we need.

Yeah thing is the billion 5100 is one of those really bad modems where when you connect it you dont know whats going on, the 711ce is much better

Uh no... my client list here has about 250+ sites across QLD, northern NSW, and one or two in New Guinea (the vast majority located in S.E.Q.). I am the only official technical person here and one of my hats is to act as advisor to the sales manager who buys all of the toys I play with.

The netcomm NB1400 is _ok_ for what you want. its a no frills (read: no freaking "firewall" -ie one that will block all about 5 common ports) adsl modem designed to be configured via Telnet or a console connection.

I've a billion 5100 at home, yeah it does alright but it wont do logging for the line establishment and PPP negociation stuff.

As for SMTP being slow and nothing else... i hightly doubt what Telstra said to you was the cause. Its funny when they pull s*** out their arse like that.

Yes, I do. You know why? Because I'm sitting here with my tech support hat on answering the phone and dealing with problems. I'm also typing up proposals (including one for a new software dev. project I'm hoping to get off the ground soon). I'm also on whirlpool atm trying to find out if Telstra is having any issues in Milton. See, I multitask, its not very hard.

What stinky said. The Cisco 1701s I've used here have worked flawlessly since they were put in to replace POS modem + router combinations.

Chances are tey were on a residential plan and hosting a SMTP server where port 25 is BLOCKED. Therefore SMTP is useless.

No, they were on a business plan (as are all clients), and it wasn't an SMTP server being hosted nor do any of our clients (except 1 or 2) have their own mail servers. It just would not let SMTP traffic through properly (or at all) - not even to Bigpond's mail server (if it were only a prob. with Bigpond's mail server I wouldn't have been surprised) nor the mail server here at work that I admin.

That's nice, but English weather and hot beer is enough to send most Australians nuts. There's a reason our families decided to leave the UK (for the record my families came here from Ireland about 100 years ago).
