ACtually if you get a program called netstumbler and go for a drive through westend and the city aannnnnnnnd i think rocklea, you will find unsecure networks. I went trawling with some friends, we found networks so unsecure we could have basicly wiped out the company. exchange, active directory etc! idiots. but its a good way too kill a night :D

Asifn't Dell.

I just had a quick look at Dell, you can get the same thing, but with an 80 gig hard drive, 1 year onsite warranty, free bubblejet printer, free 128mb usb key and an 8x DVD-RW that does + and - for $2297 (admitedly, doesn't have the radeon 9600).

Or, for a little bit extra, you can get the same thing you did, but with a 128mb Radeon 9600 instead of the 64mb, as well as the free bubblejet printer and 1 year onsite warranty for $2500.

Holy crap. I haven't researched laptop prices in a while, but that seems really good to me for what you got... specialy considering it's NOT a widescreen system (that's a good thing, widescreen displays are annoying) and has a 9600!

Whoa, what?

I got an LM50-3 about 8 months ago and I've been super happy with it. It's a nice slimline laptop with really good specs. I've had my ear to the ground for ages and I haven't heard _anything_ bad about them.

Also, I think LG _does_ make these laptops... from what I can tell LG has been making laptops for some time for other manufacturers... which helped me make my decision.

I really have liked my laptop so far, it had easily the best specs when I bought it for the money, and all in a really slimline case. So many things good about this laptop.

The only bad thing I found is that my battery has died well early... I can only charge it to 20.6 Wh now (after 8 months), and the design spec is 48.8Wh. Which is woeful, however I've just now looked into a replacement under warranty (because I think that's crap), and they agreed with me and are going to send me a new battery, just like that.

So I don't know about these "horror stories", but there's at least one good story for you.

I played Doom3 through on my laptop and was totally happy with it.

The screen is _amazing_, the computer does everything I'd want it to, is compatible out the wazoo (thanks in part to being a centrino), I'm really happy with mine.

It's a slick beastie so far. You never know of course, but I'm 8 months in and still cranking fine.

I just ordered a new laptop. I was torn between the IBMT41p/or T42 for power + battery life + light weight and a full blown desktop replacement so I can run games. In the end I opted for the monster Dell 9100. The thing weighs probably something like 4.5kg and will no doubt burn through a battery in less than an hour if playing a game, but that doesn't really bother me as it's almost always plugged in on my desk. Got:
* P4 3.4 Ghz
* 512 Meg ram (weak point)
* 15.4" WSXGA+ (1680*1050)
* 256 Meg ATI Mobility Radeon 9800
* 60gig 7200 rpm HDD
* DVD +-rw (haven't kept up on dvd format wars so don't really know)
* Standard 96Whr battery + spare 132 Whr
* 2 150W AC adapters
* 3 year next business day on site warranty + international
* 3 year coverguard theft protection
* dell optical mouse
* external speakers + subwoofer
* Dell colour inkjet printer
* "deluxe" case, whatever that means
* Dell a/b/g miniPCI wifi

Other stuff I'm sure. I somehow looked at their website the other week when they were having these crazy $1000 dollar off specials so the whole thing cost $4020.

That is all.

i started off at HN Everton park, as a storeman, then managed the computer warehouse then my current boss called me and offered me a job at indro managing the lil dock there, and then i said i wanted to go on the floor, he said sweet, and now i run the games centre and a salesman as well.

but if u want a job nows the best time to apply, we need staff hardcore, all u gotta do is bring in your resume,
also if u get called in, wear your best suit and tie etc. he loves that :)

Nobody elses fault if you can't do your own research, its not hard, theres this thing called the Internet now which puts the information literally at your fingertips!

"deluxe" case, whatever that means

They're nice, its a nice leather satchel type case, I got one chucked in free with my laptop (was one of their deals at the time).

To save myself arguing, i will just copy + paste from a discussion on another forum. This was not even my comments.

having sold so many notebooks i dare not remeber, i will tell you brands NOT to go for:

BENQ
LG
ACER

These have by FAR (im meaning about 8-10% failure) rates which is UNACCEPTABLE, to the point, i refuse selling them.

Brands to get:

TOSHIBA
PACKARD BELL/NEC
COMPAQ/HP

we'll be lucky to get 1/1000 with an issue.

Dells are great for value for money, but that is at a sacrifice. Build quality, warranty claims and general quality do lack somewhat on the dells, but they are great value for money, as long as you get no problems.

I would say 1920 res on a 15.4" screen is beyond a joke, most (graphic users excempted) would NEVER use 1920 on a 21" CRT! dont go more than 1440, better still, get the 1280, at least you'll play some good games in native on it!

=======================================

That LS50 range is one of our HIGHEST return machines, seriosuly. Is the most flimsy s*** build quality of any notebook we sell, hence the VERY low invoice cost on them, they are VERY cheap units.

I was referring al the Centrino based notebooks, P4 ones etc HAVE had issues, ALL manufactures at one time have, i was mainly talking about the current crop, and details on them.

And as for the 8-10%, no, 1 in 10 are returned in regards to the LG (usualy screen issues, MANY dead pixels from new, also, seems to be having a LOT of hdd spinning up issues as well.) BENQ, having s*** battery life, and cases actually cracking, and Acers running hot enough they shut down (its a damn centrino, i mean, hell its not a P$ FFS!)

You seem to of bummed out with the older COmpaqa, but now they are owned by HP, the units have improved considerably.

Im not sticking with what is known as "good brands" i sell, and monitor the repairs of these, i've seen litterly 1000's go out, and see what comes back. so that is PROOF not specualtion.

Also, even our LG rep admits they are "cheap and shearful, to cater for the lowend market".

Im glad while your doing reading, im seeing ltitally 1000's or these over months (we sold 600+ notebooks in August) im seeing FIRST hand, not reading websites "reveiw sample" opinions.

Asus, i had an M6N, best damn notebook i ever had, saw or had the pleasure to use. Cant comment on other models though, as we dont sell them.

Personally, i think the new Packard Bell Easynote G5 is by far the best build/feature packer centrino in the 2k range, sadly they lack in GFX though

Seems to sum up things pretty well i think.

Bleh, decided to re-write after reading trumpto's post.

I've been selling laptops for almost 18months now, and I can tell you all that from my experience, the best two brands in terms of the amount that come back, are HP/Compaq and Sony.

We very rarely get any bad reports on them.

Toshiba's have a really good reputation and they are good laptops (except for a few weird things they seem to have been doing recently, electric shock on a p20 anyone?) but they arent made in Japan anymore, like everyone thinks... Sony's are the only brand I know of that actually assemble their machines in Japan.

I've heard bad reports on Asus, but have never actually sold them or used them, so cant really comment. Acer's are shockers, they are evidently very bad on customer service, I've had numerous customers tell me about having issues with problems. For example, a guy who bought a desknote 17" for running Sonar 3, and when the HDD spins up, the laptop would chuck crazy speed fits and go all jumpy. He tried to return it, explaining that it wont do what he was told it would, and ended up settling the matter in court.

Fujitsu's are fairly good, We have only recently started selling them, and we havent had any back that I can think of.

NEC's well, we sold an M400 which went like hotcakes, and I dont think we had many problems with them. That laptop too, was quite interesting. Being a p4, it claimed 4hr battery life and had 6 usb ports.

But yeah, in general HP/Compaq and Sony seem to be the two most reliable brands. Especially HP and Compaq since we probably sell twice as many of them as we sell Sony's.

One of the other really good things about Dell is how configureable their systems are. A lot of the other Laptops you go to stores and buy are pre-made in one configuration and you've just gotta live with it. Dell you can chop and change parts around and customise it to your liking before you buy it.

can yous give me some links then to better laptops to buy

and where on the dell site can you customise your laptop?

I just had a quick look at Dell, you can get the same thing, but with an 80 gig hard drive, 1 year onsite warranty, free bubblejet printer, free 128mb usb key and an 8x DVD-RW that does + and - for $2297 (admitedly, doesn't have the radeon 9600).
link?

this lg one has just f***ed up (battery won't charge) ffs, getting my money back
