Its an 80gig, 8 meg cache JB thing. Bought it like August last year or something. Whats the crack with getting one replaced >12 months after the purchase?

Worth the effort?

Any places i could just take it and get them to do the work? (Obviously for a price)

Resurrect what thread?

Also, the shop won't take it back as its over 12 months. Or maybe thats just because hunter got onto all the IT people and told them not to be nice to me.

I noticed before that my pings were a bit higher than usual too. Perhaps hunter got onto iinet as well.

Check the serial number on the WD website and see where it was bought from (which disty) and do an end user return with them.

The serial number only tells me when the warranty expires.

No, they do NOT. A couple of years ago, the vast majority of IDE hard drive manufacturers stopped supplying drives with 3 yr warranties as std. They changed to 1 year, with 3 yr being an optional extra that you pay more for. One reason for doing this was they were losing too much money on warranty replacements...

I own a WD740 Raptor, and it has a 5 year warranty.

I don't give a f*** if he sends it back to be quite honest. If he does end up sending it himself to the manu, he'll no doubt cock it up and send it back packaged incorrectly and hopefully they'll send it back to him at his expense.

and what sc00bs said, i took my 200gb back after a year, got sent to WD and replaced with a new black drive, only took them 2~weeks also (through gamedude)

should have gone with maxtor
except they only give 1yr warrenties i believe - seagate give 5yrs :D

That's what I thought...

I'm guessing you'll have to call WD or maybe a distibutor to sort out getting a replacement. Bit of a bitch...

Dunno if i can even be bothered.

Cause even if i do it, i'll just get another WD back. Reckon WD could send me a seagate in exchange or something.

its going to be a pain if the shop u bought it from wont take it and send it back, just your luck tho hey that happened to me a little back, my cpu f***ed up like a few weeks after the 1yr warranty was up... its like they time it to screw up or something

All Seagate retail kits (which include a box, hard drive, cables, installation guide, resource CD) have a 1 year limited warranty. For more information on retail product warranty, click here.
The seagate warranties vary depending on the product in question and whether or not it is retail (as is common with most hard drive manufacturers).

^^ Dumb comment.

Also if you bought it between a certain period last year your HDD will have a 3 year warrnty. All WD's had a 3 year warranty untill the JB's came in and they grabbed the it. After a certain time the BB's only got a 1 year. Check the serial and it will tell you.

Not really. I've had three HDD die: two at work and one at home. All have been WD. With the number of HDD manufacturers around it's fairly simple for me to avoid buying them and to specify anything but WD at work.

it's highly likely I could get it back within 2 weeks, and if the guy from the supplier is nice, he may even do straight replacement like he usually does for my personal RMA enquiries

Crunch, really, no offence but its really silly thing to say... I've had hard drives from virtually every major manufacturer in my PCs over the past 16-17 years and have had probably 3 that I can think of that have failed. I've had Fujitsus, Samsungs, IBMs (not deathstars), Maxtors (early maxtors too!! ew sllooowww!), Quantums, Seagates and finally WDs. Every seagate I have owned has been good. And my Raptor has been fantastic too. Manufacturer fanboyism rarely has any factual basis and annoys the s***e out of me.

You know what, I'd be inclined to buy a Ford just as much as a Holden provided the car I'm buying isn't a piece of s***! Both companies have had the odd turkey over the years (EA falcon anyone?) yet they still make good products.

IBM once made top quality hard drives (well they ought to have at some point seeing as though they bloody developed the things in the first place!), then they had a major f*** up and produced a series of horribly crappy drives. That eventually resulted in them selling their hard drive manufacturing capabilities because they simply could no longer afford it due to the warranty claims and class actions being brought against them.

Fujitsu once made ok drives, then they had a nasty run of 6.4 GB drives (iirc)... I've replaced dozens of Fujitsu drives in dozens of computers in the dozens of business networks that I maintain.

s*** happens and bad designs happen. Writing off an entire manfacturer because of less than a handful of bad products is silly. On the other hand... there are certain companies out there that should not be doing what they do (SiS comes close, I've had some nasty encounters with their chipsets before).

hunter, it's a different story on my side working in a tier 2 IT distributor. MDT is one hdd manufacturer that comes to mind where you wouldn't touch with a 10 foot barge-pole.

samsung drives are also amongst the higher failure rates of the drives we have sold in the past.

it's not fanboyism, it's simply effective product marketing and aftermarket service that makes them

if a drive manufacturer refuses to send replacement drives BEFORE the drive leaves australia, it means longer return times on a drive, and chances are, the australian distributor won't give straight replacements, nor will they replace without thorough testing first, for fear they'll be stuck with a non-faulty etc.

You find a steady pattern with brands on specific models of their drives, with the same problem throughout, all at around the same time. Out of the 3 biggies, there's not much difference on the AMOUNT of RMA's we do respectively. Others, such as fujitsu, or samsung seem to have a bad track record on drives purchased VS drives returned. In saying that, I thing fuji's main strongpoint in hard disk storage is more towards the notebook drives rather than IDE PC drives.

anyhows. my point is, they're allowed to prefer a particular brand if they want. If 5 seagates in a row f***ed up for you, and then you bought a Western Digital, and it ran for 5 years straight, wouldn't you prefer Western Digital because you have more faith in their manufacturing?

I've come to the conclusion the WD JB's are s***. I had a 120gb drive die earlier in the year and got another replacement, and now it's playing up already. No more WD drives for me.

So who is doing RA's at Achieva these days Moo?....is it still Elmo?

If Moo can do the RA for ya Nf thats a hell of a lot easier than trying an end user return to Achieva.

They cant deny this....its on the WD website as sold to Achieva Technology. I got our RA guy to check it out and he gave me the info.

Really is easier to give it to someone who can deal with the disty.....Moo is ya best option.
