Well, I figure theres a decent number of people from here in the beta now, and I took a couple of amusing screenshots last night, so I figured why not have a screenshot thread.

Here and here is my warlock doing his Happy Gilmore impersonation.

And heres a huge bitch.

I dont have it on its highest detail or anything either. One thing you'll want if you want to play the game on its highest detail is a s***load of ram.

The Orc dance is by far the best :) But I'll see if I can get caps of some of the other dances too.

Yeah, it does have a kind of cartoonish, stylized look to it, but its meant to. It looks like Warcraft 3 basically, except on a much larger scale :)

what genre is that? Anyway you have to remember that if it had awesome graphics like say doom 3 (which i think it could have had) then the game would require a super computer to run it. Also on top of that if it didnt have that cartoony look then it wouldnt feel like warcraft at all.

Warcraft wasnt that cartoon compared to zelda on the GC, but zelda was still an awesome game to play.

Exactly. The game might look super sexy while you're running around by yourself, but when you're in the middle of a raid and theres 50 or more people on the screen at once, you'd be in a world of hurt.

Also, I'm trying to put together a video of the undead dance (to the tune of Blur's Song 2) but I've spent the last few hours wrestling with the intracies of Gamecam and Fraps and trying to find the best way to capture and edit the movies. I've figured that all out now, but I'm too tired to actually make the movie, so I'll do it tomorrow (later today, Tuesday, whatever).

I turned all the details on and put it up to 1280x960 and took a few screenshots. They're pretty big (about 200k - 300k each) cos I didn't want to resize or compress them too much and lose quality. I was actually pretty suprised how well it still ran in such high detail. It chunked pretty bag when I was on the bird and could see s***loads of stuff at once, and it chunked pretty bad while I was in Orgrimmar (but that usually happens anyway), but generally it was pretty playable.

This is the gates of the Orc capital, Orgrimmar.

This is just some random shot I took while on the bird flying to Orgrimmar.

This is a closeup of an Orc, looks pretty cool I thought.

This is a Tauren encampment.

This is the view off into the distance from the Tauren encampment in the previous photo.

Everquest 2 is graphically better from a technical stand point...it looks fantastic.

However artistically, I think it would have to be World of Warcraft.

I just like it how, WOW doesn't try to look realistic, and it has this surreal look to it.

After playing WoW heavily for the past 2 days, I gotta say that it's going to be uber. The level of detail is outstanding, and there's more quests than you can poke a stick at to help you level. This is one of the first games I've played where I'm actually having fun exploring and enjoying looking at the scenery and close-up detail of things. The thing that really makes you go "wow" (no pun intended) are taking the bird rides between cities/towns. You get an awesome view of the part of the world you're in, and just seeing all the detail rocks. Screenshots don't really do the game justice either, it seems to be better looking playing the actual game than it does in the screenshots.

it wasnt obvious until i watched the video genesis. i was saving others the trouble. sarcasm is something that is often lost with text. dick.

those screens look pretty sweet khel. it does indeed look just like warcraft. of course thats awesome.

people who cant get over the presentation of a game never know what they are missing. ie zelda : ww, warcraft, xii was it?. all take a stylistic approach with graphics and designs. it doesnt hinder gameplay. arent you all sick of boring shiny textured polygons?

A couple of months, on and off. I've played a mage and a warlock the most, but I've tried the paladin, warrior, druid and hunter a bit as well. At this point, I'm thinking I'll probably play a mage on release, but it depends on what extra stuff the Warlock gets when they patch in the rest of his pets and higher level stuff.

As a warlock though, I often feel like a third wheel in a group. Now that Soulstones have been rendered nowhere near as useful as they once were, and healthstones give a pitiful amount of life back at the point I'm at, nobody really wants either of them anymore. When you're in a group with a high level warrior your pets dont really serve much purpose except to deal a bit of extra damage, which they're really not all that great at doing, and sure you've got a s***load of dots but the mob is usually dead before you even have time to cast them all let alone have time for them to have any real effect. The DD spells the Warlock has aren't anything special either, and your bolt has such a long cast time that you're lucky if you even get one off before the mob is dead.

Solo though, the Warlock is a f***en machine. Easily the best solo class I've played.

Khel - Do you find that it's hard playing a mage later on when you're solo'ing. I was in the stress test, so I didn't exactly get to play it for an long time, but I found after level 10 I had to run away alot.

Maybe I was just not patient enough and wanted to kill bigger and badder things, but I had problems doing some quests. Obviously if I was with another character it was fine. It was just when I was by myself.

Yeah, they are, bring out the Voidwalker (or Succubus I guess, but I haven't got mine yet) and its like having a third person in your party. Especially good if you're not grouped with a tank or someone whos good at absorbing damage. Only problem is the vw taunt is pretty lame compared to a warrior taunt, but theres a talent to improve that (which I intend to max out :)

Well, yeah, mages aren't really soloing machines due to the fact they're soft and squishy as soon as something gets up close. You should have no troubles taking out stuff around your level though by using frostbolts to snare and nova when they get close. And if things are going REALLY badly you can always polymorph them and make your escape. Before the mage was toned down they were soloing machines, but not so much anymore (and quite rightly so, they were way overpowered before). Really though, you can solo with most characters, even a priest, Warlocks just seem to be really good at it because they come with a ready made tank to absorb all the damage and taunt off them while they throw dots around.

Check out http://www.worldofwarcraft.com and go through the game info links on the left hand side, should give you an understanding of how the different classes and stuff work. Theres a lot of info on that site :)

Its a real beta test, its been going for months and they're constantly adding more features and balancing stuff and fixing stuff. By the time it reaches Open Beta though, it should be mostly finished (feature complete at least). So yeah, you find the odd problem or bug here and there, but Blizzard is addressing them.

I haven't had any real problems playing on American servers. Occasionally some nights you might get a big lag spike or something, but its not a regularly occurance, and 95% of the time its perfectly playable. Also, it'll prolly be more like $20 or $25 a month, not $40.

I made a quick video of the character creator, chucked some WoW music in the background too (the first bit is the music from Orgrimmar, the second bit is the music from Stormwind).

It comes in two flavours, high quality (10mb) or low quality (2.5mb).

Warlocks and Tanks don’t entirely mix very well, at least at the early-mid levels. It isn’t that they mix badley, but the two don’t intermix each others skills out at all. Warriors smack s*** up over time and absorb crazy damage, while Warlocks dot f***ers over time and their pet absorbs crazy damage.

Both need DPS, and warriors need healing :)

However, I find that when we get into groups of 4/5 Khels pet could offtank adds that I don’t see (at first), at least until I get around to dropping taunt on them.

I’ll post some images of the boss mob in the first Instance for Hoard tomorrow … He has a big sword and he likes to smack people in the f*** (across the room actually).

For those of you who are interested on what Warriors are like to play … they are possibily one of the best implementations of Warriors in any RPG to date. I just snap c***s down like they are girly men, and absorb f***loads of damage.

Warriors don’t have (with the exception of Mortal Strike (a talent)) decent burst DPS, instead they do sustained damage over a length of time (as long as they keep getting heals).

In summary; I feel happy playing this warrior. They are a focal point in groups because they can make everything agro on them. While they can still solo, but yet in an overpowerful kind of way.

All in all … very cool.

Theres a whole bunch of different skin colors, its one of the things you choose when you create your character.

However, I find that when we get into groups of 4/5 Khels pet could offtank adds that I don’t see (at first), at least until I get around to dropping taunt on them.

Yeah, thats kinda what I find myself using my pet for in groups now, a method of crowd control. I'm usually hanging back with the mages and the priests and the various other soft folk, and if the tank is up the front and is already busy with a few mobs, he might not immediately notice that something has added onto us from behind and is smacking the s*** out of a priest or a mage or something, so I can stick my pet on it and taunt it and let my pet absorb the damage till the warrior is ready to take care of it.

Of course, if a mage or something decides to start then nuking the f*** out of the add, my efforts become useless, because my pet's taunt isn't strong enough to be able to taunt off of an over-nuking mage.

I've been duoing with Obes from 1-13 so far and we've had little to no problems. Obes has a Warlock, and I have a shaman. Could be a little harder at higher levels because of DPS, but at the moment it's fine.

From what I've seen and heard from experienced MMORPG players, warriors are fine. Apparently some people think they suck, but people who know how to play one think they're A-ok.

I watched a level 60 warrior duel a level 60 priest last night, and the warrior got totally owned. The priest didn't lose 1 bit of life, I guess that's the difference between someone who knows how to play their class, and someone who doesn't.

That was done using Fraps (2.2.5 registered). I'm running the game in 1280x960 and I set fraps up to record at half size and 25fps with no sound. I then used Premiere to chop it up and edit it and add the soundtrack. The main reason its in wmv is because its really really easy to export stuff in wmv format using Premiere now (its got a cool little built in wizard that does most of the work for you and has WMV support built in). Its still rather painful exporting as Xvid or Divx, and more often than not doesn't end up working properly, so if I wanted it in Xvid I'd have to render it into some relatively lossless format, and then use something like virtualdub to make it xvid, which I probably would if it was important, but that video was hardly important :)

Edit: Just on the subject of making ingame movies, theres a very cool program I came accross called Gamecam (http://www.planetgamecam.com) that blows Fraps away. Way, way more options, and theres pretty much no noticeable performance hit while you're recording. The downside is it doesn't seem to have been updated to work properly with dx9 yet, so it causes all sorts of weirdness in WoW. Once its updated though and works properly in WoW, I wont be using anything else.

I set it to record at full but it always records at 640 x 512 (I'm running at 1280 x 1024).

Not Happy Jan!

I've used GameCam before but as you said its way to buggy with the current version. I notice no performance hits using fraps.

I found it slaughtered my performance when I set it to record at full, to the point where the game wasn't really playable. It says in the documentation though that if you're running in a resolution higher than 1024x768, it automatically drops back to half.

1280x1024 is a gimp ass resolution anyway, try running a real resolution and your videos might look better :P

Player housing may eventually come in, and guild housing isn't going to make release. Actually to tell you the truth it is pretty far down the list of needs, and when it is actually done it will be instanced somewhere non essential.

Guild housing is a bit of a wank really. The only real use for it in DAOC is guild banks and consignment merchants.

In EQ they have a bazaar system.

In UO houses stuffed the game up alot .. stupid placement of them etc etc

WOW auction houses are the best option out of them all.

Auction houses rock. So many times I've just needed a cheap piece of armor or a weapon, or to buy some components for a trade skill and you jump on the AH and there they are.

The selling aspect can be pretty handy too. I've been doing blacksmithing, and the stuff I'm making doesn't really sell back to vendors for much (made a few chain mail belts for a level 10ish type person and I only get 1s for them at vendors), but I stuck them on the AH with starting bits of 2s and a buyout of 5s and sold 5 of them in a day. Didn't make a killing or anything, but I made way more than I would just pawning them to a vendor, and its not like it was any harder for me to stick them on the AH.
