sup.
I just got a new mobo, cpu and vid card (well iv had the vid card for a bit) and chucked them all into my case today. The mobos an abit nf7s-2 and the cpu is a barton xp 2500. posts fine, gets to the blue windows screen (after i have booted off the cd rom so i can format / install windows), it says down the bottom press f6 if u gotta install any raid drivers, then press f2 if you have to run some active safe stuff.. then it just goes blank. the blue screen with no writing.. it usually pops up with the licence agree thing.. nothing. I thought it was the CD, I have since tried using dads legit XP cd, and another xp cd. I got different errors with those cd's. First time i got something about error in like 1797 in d:/winxpsp1/base/root/blah/s***/file.exe I don't see why my CD rom would just die when i put a new mobo in? but is it possible?? f***ing hell what a load of cock if it is the cdrom. i have tried changing IDE cables, didn't work. I've taken everythin out of the computer minus the ram cpu and mobo, and put it all back in, still doesn't work. wtf^^ mate |

Sounds like your cd-rom has gone.
That or theres a conflict somewhere along the way. And yes they can "just do that" |

You put a new motherboard in?
You need to do a windows repair or a full format. |

If you need to reformat also try fdisk. YOu will only be able to format to 10gig but once you're in windows you can fix the other gigs up.

sigh.. got it running normally again.. used the other cdrom..does the exact same thing. No errors any more, just nothing happening after it says press f2.
What the hell is wrong here.. it cant be the motherboard, it can't be the CPU, it can't be the HDD(its not even involved in anything yet-doesn't get far enough). afaik it could be the ram.. the rams fairly old.. i will switch it with my sisters ram now. The guy from below 0 told me to change the CPUFSB/RAMFSB to 5/4 cause i asked him if pc2100 ram would run with the xp2500. could that^ be related in any way? plz help =(.wheres koopz when i need him lol last edited by existence` at 16:47:39 29/May/04 |

Just get a temp cd rom drive. I've had a similar problem with a cd rom drive I have in my older pc so I just take my dvd rom while I install xp then it works fine with the xp drivers. Because your cd rom drive may be older then the universal drivers on the bios or whatever or newer whatever. So just try a diff cd rom drive then when you've got xp install whack your norm back in.

I'm pretty sure it's the RAM as the XP CD loads into RAM before it installs. What is your FSB rated at because I think your RAM will run at the same speed as the FSB and if it is running at 333mhz(166mhz x 2) then your RAM might be overclocked as it is only rated for 266mhz.

ok w00t its formatting / installing now.
Before when it wouldn't work, I had 2 x 256meg sticks in the 2 ram slots that are next to each other. I took 1 stick out, and shifted the other stick to the isolated, 3rd ram slot. Then i went into bios, and i thought about something that the below-0 dude told me when i asked how my pc2100 ram would run with the xp2500 having a faster FSB. he told me to change that ratio thing to 5/4 (CPU/RAM). So i changed that ratio back to "By spd", and with the 1 stick of ram, it booted! So now I don't realy know whether i have a dodgey bit of ram, or if that having that 5/4 ratio turned on was f***ing with my pc. I guess once windows is installed i will test further to see what the problem is. If it is the 5/4 ratio thing.. can anyone suggest why? The guy at below-0 was cluey as hell about it. i basically asked whats the deal with running slower ram with the faster cpu and he said he had the exact same problem, but putting on the 5/4 ratio is what to do. hmmm.. o_O edit. yeah deadly fly, my ram is rated at 266mhz, but the CPU runs at 333mhz. So I think the "By spd" setting will make my RAM fsb run at 333mhz.. Or will it drop my CPU FSB to 266 mhz.. i guess i can check when i get into windows. last edited by existence` at 17:07:36 29/May/04 |

you should upgrade that ram ASAP
rather large bottleneck and as you have already found out nforce boards dont like ram running out of sync with fsb. |

That happened to me when I got stick of ram back on warranty, had Ricky come over and take a look, he ran memtest or whatever it's called and it said they were fine. Just moved them to other slots trying different combinations etc and it has been fine since then, just try all the different combos you can
