once again, the broncos have slumped to a narrow loss.
with the final just around the corner, the broncos wont stand a chance if they dont raise their confidence by winning games. they seem to be stuggling to finish the hard work off, but there isnt any lack of effort Is this an end of an Era? |

Well, I'm hardly surprised that the broncos suck in the last half of the year, as most of em end up playing state of origin, and then having to back it up with games in between origin matches.
Sif they shouldnt have state of origin outside regular league season. Or maybe have it, in a 3 weekend period, where all teams have a bye or something :) |

the broncos had 2 byes during the origin's. If the broncos lose the next game they wont make the finals. (may depend on how other teams go)

And I went to school with Brad Meyers, but you don't see me jumping for joy. This was always going to happen. The broncos never had a chance, not even at the start of the season.
Leave S.O.O. during regualer season, it shows the men from the boys. |

the dragons lost today so they are out of the running
i think we are 28 points ahead of parra on for and against, so if we lose and they win next week, they still need to make up thoose points. To get an idea of how much state of origin hurts the broncos, look back to 2 days after origin 1, when we beat canberra in canberra, who were at that stage the premiership leaders and had no origin players, compared to our 11, as we went top of the table. Since then we've struggled. Looking to the first week of the finals, it looks like the broncos will play penrith, in the 1v8 game. Even though we have lost 7 from 8, i dont think any team has scored more then 20 against us, so we still have quality defense. We would have won last night had we completed out sets and not made really poor errors. |

Most clubs do have their ups and downs, however the Broncos have been riding high ever since they entered the competition.
It's time to go... Wayne. |

Why should the State of Origin be rescheduled to cater for the Broncos?
The SOO has been around a lot longer than the Broncos... if one team wishes to buy up all the best players then stiff s*** if they get hit hard. |

It's time to go... Wayne.WTF, time to get a clue mate. The bronco's have been done in their last 6 matches by a flea's dick unlike some other teams in the top 8, Mexicians (Melbourne), Knights, Warriors have been done alot worst than the Broncos(thier worst defeat in those 6 matches is 10points, 4 have been 2 points). |

That comment was a throwaway line, but I'll endeavour to justify it.
Wayne Bennett has been coach of the Broncos since their inaugural year in 1988 after previously being co-coach (along with Don Furner) of the Canberra Raiders(my team). In those fifteen years (longer than some of the people on these boards have been alive) he has had star studded outfits with the best contemporary and newly recruited talent in the league to deliver several premierships to their fans. While it is his perogative to blame State of Origin football for the injuries that have left his team depleted of a number of talented players, the series has been around since 1980. Every team that cedes players to SOO is affected and the Broncos have recruited too heavily from Queensland ranks so that they are more affected than any other in the NRL come Origin time. As Bennett along with Cyril Conwell is heavily involved in player recruitment, who else can you point the finger at? The NRL? Don't they know that SOO is the centrepiece of Rugby League in Australia and that the best players should be called up? Yes, they do. And so does Wayne Bennett. Admittedly the Broncos have never been as disadvantaged by player injuries more than this season however managing these unexpected occurences are a coaches job. Most teams recruit more widely than their own backyards. RL is a professional game and while loyalty is an admirable trait by sticking with players from Queensland (for less money than they could have commanded elsewhere) and playing them in his team Bennett has assisted with the demise of the Broncos. Taking on players like Richard Swain After being with the same club and the same coach for such a long time the method becomes stale, the coach can no longer inspire and the abilities and spirit of the players suffer accordingly. The Broncos should have won their last six games, especially when they've been so close. The Broncos of old would have. I've watched games this year when the old confident Broncos would have opted for a tap and go for the try but this current crop are more content to play it safe and go for penalty shots at goal. Perhaps this is just an isolated season and Wayne Bennett will turn them around in 2004. I'd like to think they will. What they could use is a new coach to reinvigorate them and that would require Wayne Bennett to go. |
