I was thinking of getting cable internet but wasn't sure which type and isp to get. Should i get cable or ADSL? And what isp has the best deals? i will most likely go cable as it is much faster but just wanted your opinions. thanks

Telstra is gay, Optus is the best for Cable, $54.95 for 550mb a month. And Telstra is faster but not as good.

im also interested in this;

any happy customers from some of the other major providers (iinet, ozforces, DODO?)

please post if u can let me know what the other mobs are like;

saw a pretty unhappy thread on the ozforces support board, where every customer was complaining that their adsl was slower than dialup

iinet looks pretty good (512k/128, 80 bux a month for 12 gig)

just my opinion but friends at the momment are going to internode... i would probably suggest the same.

I will also do the same as long as they are happy with the service.

Why? Because it is cheaper then telstra, it has unlim DL and is reasonably fast.... i mean its all round better!

I am still waiting to see what pings they get on servers...

First of all, how much are you likely to download.

Telstra's speed and reliability is all well and good, but what's the point when you can blow your monthly usage in under 2 hours worth of ausgamers downloads.

Cable is dead, forget it. Go for one of the many ADSL plans out there that actually offer value for money.

It looks like A LOT of people are experiencing problems with the new wave of ADSL Unlim plans - keeping in mind that the majority of whirlpool readers can be quite whiney.

Also, the intelligence level of the whirlpool forum goers is questionable; I posted a reply in the above linked forum regarding ping times, saying that I would steer clear of any ADSL plan that can't sustain ping times below 50ms to Aussie game servers. IMO anything above 50 is unacceptable for online gaming (fps) - this is one of the responses:
Matt..

I am a gamer..

My pings yesterday were 80ms to 180ms and I had no problems playing CS or Warcraft III on USA states servers...

So why would you stay away from it..

Brendan

From what Ive used/gathered/heard/assumed, if your a big d/ler go ADSL, specifically somewhere like iiNet, if your focus is more on gaming etc, and you dont feel the need to download 50 new games and a cinemas worth of movies each month, BPA cable :p

I've found that adsl is cheaper than cable, because of the caps you get with adsl.

Watch out for Comindico resellers (Dodo, Ozforces, Aardvark, etc). There have been *many* complaints about speed and latency, so the best advice is to wait a bit till things settle down a bit.

IINet had some issues about a month or so ago, but they've pretty much been resolved, and I highly recommend them (some of the best tech support you will ever get)

My personal experience with the following

Telstra Cable: (1 yr) 3G cap made it worthless

Telstra Adsl: 512/128 (At Work 2 yrs) Hell on Earth, don't get me started.

Netspace: 1500/256 (18Months) 10Ggb Plan Excellent in all respects!

Internode Flatrate: 1500/256 (last 6 months) obstensibly unlimited and I'm delerious with my experience thus far.

Optus cable. Won't get charged for going over 3, however, you'll drop down to 28.8k a sec when you do go over.

Telstra cable, get rammed up the ass once you go over 3, however, due to the very coolness of GA and bigpond files, you can actually rack up a s***load more then 3gig if you want.

As long as the usage meter is funtioning properly at the time. heh, T$ meter acually working, that would be news.

I know a few people who got iinet and on the whole I think they were happy with it.

I like our optus cable (other than getting stuffed around on the install this time around and currently being capped to 28.8kbit for going over 3gig this month). Optus never seems to have any outtages, yet in the past on both telstra (cable and dsl) they would have periods of lagginess and/or total loss of connection for extended periods (I've had to endure a 2 day outtage on telstra dsl) with little or no explanation or apology afterwards.

You're not serious are you? 550 Mb could be blown far too quickly for it to be of any use...

I originally had BPA and I cancelled my contract before it was out, poor D/L speeds and pings and the tech service was a joke.

I've had Optus Cable now for about 2 years and haven't looked back. It only costs me $63.95/m Telstra is now $87/m for same plan.

Telstra has picked up it's game since I left by scraping the speed cap. Optus went backward by imposing the 3gig cap but I don't get anywhere near it to be a worry.

Infact I'm on 840meg for month :/

For those who complain of problems with BPA cable, must be area related Id assume, We've had one outage in the last year or more, it lasted a couple of hours, and Telstra gave us a 25% rebate on our bill for our trouble. Their starting to get better with the customer service, though obviously it still has a way to go.

Works fine for me. Downloaded 6 CDs of Mandrake 9.1 off the Telstra Fileservers. Worked like a charm.

How fast do most people get from telstra?

Speedtests usuually gimme about 1.3 megabit with download typically 100-200kB/s (sometimes more)

probalby my neighbourhood is full of ppl with it or something

but yeah, cable = win apart from cap

i have hardly any data :(

What result do you get from there?

I'm behind a router, but I don't think that's the problem since I've tried it straight to the modem with similar results.

Don't laugh but ...

cable speed + Telstra access charges + Bad month with kazza or some s*** left on by n00b or lazy kid = Sell home to pay bill

Two best monthly charges I've seen is $12,000 and $16,000 respectively

but can you still get a 10% discount?
