Topic: shaving hurts - how to stop it?

i've been shaving (facial hair) for at least a couple of years now, and it still hurts to shave. the closer the skin i cut it, the more it hurts. my electric shaver sucks and doesn't cut it close enough, so i use it and then a razor.

that aside, afterwards i get red marks and stuff, which i presume is referred to as "rash". it also hurts. let's not even try putting soap on it (not to sooth it, i'm talking in the shower), ouch.

so... how do i stop it from hurting? is there an afterlotion or whatever that i can apply to my skin after shaving that will sooth the skin and prevent "rash"? if there is, does it matter how long after you put it on, for instance if the skin has already rashed, will the lotion still help, or do i need to put it on straight after shaving?

and yes i have tried the solution which is not to shave, and the solution didn't agree with me very well :)

mach3, electric is it? swear i've seen an ad for it...

i wouldn't shave either, if i could get my genes adjusted so that i wouldn't grow facial hair except where i want to (like, i still want hair on my head), and it took effect within a month. at least, i presume you'd have to adjust genes to do that. laser treatment only lasts so long, i believe, and it's god damn expensive.

he's right there, get one of them multiblade units.

I've got a s***ty skin condition so the following is a little quirky but what the hell, it works

1) multi blade thingie
2) Use soap not shaving cream (it's thicker and seems to lube more)
3) shave in the shower (no lack of soothing moisture) ...:)

If it doesn't help it least its amusing.

I went for the "f*** im lazy, and f*** off if you want me paying $20 for 8 blades all the time" option, invested $30 in a hair trimmer, and just use that.

I use
mach3 turbo and schick protector 3d
the protector is good for like day to day purposes cos you can use it real quick, but the turbo gives a smoother shave.

I've been speaking to some guys that I know that have facial-hair-shaving problems and they've kinda said what partyhat said:

Shave as soon as ur outta the shower, and to clean up ur mirror, use ur hairdryer, it unfogs it in a second.
OR, if u can, put a mirror in ur shower and shave in there.
Moisturise, change ur aftershave/shaving cream reguarly. If it keeps up, see a dermatologist or a GP to see if u have a reaction to either.

Hope this helped!

Hot shower works for me, or a steaming hot towel works pretty good as well.

Try the following:

1. Make sure your razor is sharp
2. Run it under hot water before each pass
3. Use a shaving gel for sensitive skin, preferably with Aloe Vera.

I used to get skin irritations from shaving, so most of the time during uni (when I didn't have my goatie) I only shaved every second day, but still had problems.

But now I shave every day and have no problems. I definitely recommend shaving while in the shower (the steamy air definitely seems to help soften up the beard, making it easier to cut) and I just use regular soap - not shaving cream.

My tip though, is to get hold of a little handheld mirror that you can leave in the shower, otherwise you end up with uneven sideburns, goatie, etc. :)

I shave before showering else the shave cream leaves a residue which dries your skin out.

I have always used a brunette electric, but if never did a close shave, and goatie always had like a gradient to my skin (jesus, I am a nerd). So I used a shaver the other night (funny experience actually, imagine 2 guys dancing to krafty kuts like dicks, one shaving the other who has shaving cream over about 95% of his face) and it did a dope job, esp on the goaties side bits. Though I got a rash on my upper neck bit. kinda irritating really.

anyway I think my plan will be
use a mach3 (prob) to get the main bit.
then electric underneath
then clippers to put a nice 1-2 over what is left.

ladies watch out.

what direction is my grain? my skin ain't like wood, I can't tell...

I used to have pretty f***ed skin from years of abuse in the Army. With camo paint, sweat, grime, cold dry shaving with dirty razors giving me rashes and blocked pores - it was f***ed.

Now its all cool cos I use a range of s*** from Nivea for men.

Psycho! once mentioned something on this board about how Nivea aftershave balm rocks for even old buggers like him. So I gave it a go and now i swear by the s***, I wont shave without it. It conditions the skin and gets rid of any rashes etc. So silky!

  • Shave everyday in the shower using small mirror.

  • Use sensor excel, for accurate sculpting of sideburns that only two blades can provide.

  • Use Nivea shaving foam with aloe vera and sea minerals :D

  • Only do down strokes, and side strokes - never shave up if you have a mega strong whiskers like me.

  • Then use Nivea exfoliating gel to get rid of any dead skin and other s***.

  • Pat dry with clean towel.

  • Put on Nivea aftershave balm (you only need a little bit) and feel the instant relief and confidence of your buddaful clean face!

  • btw, i got a new job as the marketing dude for nivea :P

btw, I use a Gilette Sensor Excel (the light grey one with twin-blades and moisturising strip). It's pretty good and the blades aren't too pricey (though a LOT more expensive than what they were) - between $7-9 for 5 I think.

what direction is my grain? my skin ain't like wood, I can't tell...

Let the hair grow a bit and take a close look at which way the hairs lie. Either that or just run your hand over a bit of stubble - it's rougher when you go agains the grain. You facial hairs don't always grow down either - the hair directly under my chin goes sideways, growing from my left to my right.

Been shaving for bout 12 years now, used to have evil bad rash especially on my neck. I'm a hairy prick too.

All of the above is good stuff. I don't get rashes now.

    - It gets better. Your skin toughens over time into yer 20s (probably because youve been scraping it off over and over and over) and the hair becomes coarser. This actually helps.

    - If you can afford em, use super ultra sensitive shaving gels, and Mach 3 razors - Sensor Excels are almost as good and a bit cheaper. I keep a pack of Excels in the cabinet for a lean week :)

    - Shave after a hot shower. Never shave with cold or lukewarm water, if you run out of hot water go boil some in the jug.

    - If you can, try and give your face a day off now and then. I find that when I shave for a whole week I start getting problems again, so I try and work it so I have a day or two at least a week where I don't have to.

    - Reduce the number of passes with the razor. I'm big on the one swipe with the grain, one swipe against method. If you have an area that is prone to irritation (like my neck is just under the chin) avoid annoying it.

Yeah, I believe in that. I rarely - if ever - shave on weekends. Should've seen me after the long weekend just gone - I was a hairy bastard! :)

And that first shave after not shaving for a few days is always a good one - nice and close (the longer the hair is, the easier it stands up and gets cut nice and low) and lasts longer than normal (the longer the hair gets, the slower it grows I've found).

You might get dirty rashes. Some chicks get weird rashes where their moustache used to be and it looks bad ;)

I use a mach 3, shave every second (or third) day cause im lazy and looking like a bit of a bum doesnt wrry me much. Make sure you only shave with the grain. I do 3, 4 or 5 passes if its not coming off in that direction. (just dont go against, thats what is gonna make it bad often)

I always do it before showering because then I can wash off the residue which feel s***. Nice hot water and some facial cleansing washy stuff is great.

That aside ive never had any problem with a rash and I have quite fair skin... Maybe im just lucky.

yeah my skin is really sensitive as well.

as for the grain thing, if i don't shave against the grain, there's too much hair left, even if i do three hundred passes (no, really).

    eye_kandy, i already said that wasn't an option :P

i don't shave every day, more like every two to three days (i'm just too lazy). we'll see if a job will sort me out.

i just got that nivea aftershave stuff, before i made this thread (parents shopped tonight).

and strex - your post provides me with great laughter. yeah, i'm using more and more nivea things, not sure if it's a sign or what.

    im a gillette/mach 3 fan boy

the mach 3 turbo keeps my precious goatee in tip top condition, the gel runs so smoothly across the face, and the aftershave gel is cool and refreshing

but yeah, i go a lot against the grain to get it smooth, then moisturise about an hour after ive put the aftershave gel on

the longer the hair is, the easier it stands up
    that sounds....odd...
i've found that it's easier to shave when it's prickly stubble, not long, cuz it bends too much.
Been shaving for a couple of months, hasen't started hurting me yet. Although I haven't got a strong growth.
hehehe, wait till u get facial hair that's coarser than your arm hair before u join this conversation :P (kidding)

as anyone how knows me can tell you, i have pretty strong facial hair (big, red goatee), and i've found that using the expensive razors is well worth it. mach 3's are good, but i've been using schick diamond FX and they're good too. i shave with the grain to get most of it off, then go once against the grain to get it ultra smooth.

number one lesson - do not shave on days where u will be doing stuff which will make u sweat a lot. at least, untill your face has toughened up after a few years. it just irritates the f*** out of your skin if u happen to have had a 'bad' shave. if u must, don't take it as low as u can.

you will generally find that after a few years, your face will 'toughen' and it won't bother u much any more. i used to get skin irritation, now i can shave in cold water with no shaving cream and it's not a problem. it's not as good, but that's not the point :P

If you use your electric, your face has to be totally dry and devoid of oil. It seems best a while after you shower, just after you've dried off but not so long that your skin has recovered. Also seems MUCH smoother only every second day or so but that's not much of an option if you work i guess.

What about those funny electric tweezer things that pull the hairs right out while zapping the follicle? How come we can't use those? Damn it'd be nice to not have to shave.

Nivea products are s***e: they have uber amounts of chemicals, preservatives and manufactured scents that f*** you up. If you relly wanna look after your skin (and get rid of the rash) get some non-scented basic Vitamin E cream - it's a natural anti-oxidant moisteriser that heals scars as well.

If you REALLY wanna go hardcore and kill the rash without any chance of failure, get Bepanthen - the nappy rash aka post tattoo moisteriser. It works great on your lactating nips as well (apparently).

I use the Gilette Sensor Excell... it only has 2 blades, I found I have extreemly sensitive skin, so the theory may go the more blades the closer the shave but it also is the more blades the greater irrtation. I suffered realy bad from shaving rash and have found that by shaving less frequently, in the shower with the Hot water on my face while shaving I can avoid the unsitely look of a rash so evil it repels chicks.
Now I am dating Jessica Alba... not really but I am sure I stand a better chance now.
When I get out of the shower there is not much hair normally left so I finish off.
I do not use any product, not even soap, on my face because they make my skin dry and it starts to flake off, ir they "grease me up woman" and I obtain many, MANY pimples.

I have had success with this and hope ya'll can too, mind you It took a long time to get where I am today in the shaving dept. after spending many dollars on different balms and razors including a Remington (electric roazor).

don't have time to read pages 3 and four cause i'm writing a law assignment

don't know if anyone has said this yet but..

if you can shave upwards (ie against the "grain") without getting irritation.. do it... it's a closer shave.

think about the movement of the hair etc etc..

also.. don't know if anyone mentioned this but it's a BIG point..

*DON'T use moisturisers or aftershaves if you suffer from acne or big (read: greek) pores..*

A girl I knew once who had problems with .. err.. xcema (excuse my spelling there) told me that.. and I didn't get pimples where i shaved after that.. (which was big considering i was 18 at the time)
