Rob from Bigkid sends word that he has done a post on the recent Summerblue.net article that has caused a few problems in the CS community, this article basicly highlights the problems and inconsistancies with the HL engine and CS modification: The worst thing about this Summerblue article is that all the wowsers out there that bitch and moan because they got nailed will use it as a justification for their pathetic ineptness. What they forget is that the guy who just spread them accross the wall is in fact using the very same engine they are. The rules are the same for everybody (Cheaters aside of course, but that's another issue). Check out Robs thoughts here |

if I was playing a game, and unloaded my weapon into someone and lost the game because of a bug that prevented my bullets from hitting the target and letting me win, I'd be somewhat upset and feeling a little angry towards that game for being so bug-ridden that I lost even though I was a better player. Imho, its like playing tennis. If a lineman calls a shot that's out when it was actually in, the player that hit said shot would be understandably frustrated. When he goes home and watches the replay after losing the game because of that critical point, he'd probable feel (understandably) angry at the system that allowed him to lose. Same thing in Counter-Strike - imagine watching the replay of a CS game (assuming it provided sufficient quality to determine whether or not you actually hit the target) and seeing that you lost the game because of a stupid accuracy bug in one of the weapons. It continues to surprise me exactly how much slaw CS players are willing to put up with in the CS game itself to continue playing it. Props to you guys for being so persistent, but I hope at the same time you're mailing Goose and Valve to fix these problems. Maybe its a feature that's supposed to emulate the randomness of gunfights or something. Shrug. |

I only play it because mostly its fun. Anyone that takes the game seriously needs to get a life. Nice speech trog. Everyone knows the games buggy as all s***e, so blaming the code or other players for off games is a waste of time. Sure, it can be frustrating, especially with cheaters, but i usually tell cheaters to play on their own, and leave. Like i said, shouldnt take it seriously. |

Exactly. Frustration and CS go hand in hand. The whole issue with the weapons has pissed me off for ages. Perhaps the reason they put up with it is that they are too stupid to realise that its not fun - sort of like goldfish. |

I should add that I'm not talking about happy fun playing for enjoyment CS type games, I'm talking about playing for money in the CPL and other competition type games here. Obviously in screwaround games, who cares - but in games that people are playing to win... |

Ah, well, thats the crux of the matter, playing cs in a competition with a buggy game. I spose most diehard cs'ers live with the inconsistencies, the cheats, and the frustration. They choose to compete, and there's no alternative, but i'd wager that's one of the major reasons for all the bitching in the cs community, the unlevel playing field. We never had bitching about cheats or crappy code in the quake2 ctf days, thats the nature of cs though. On a lan, the game should be more even, latency shouldnt be an issue, but on the net, its farkin hopeless, sometimes your connections good, other times it's disheartening. Sure, there's techniques u can use, like squatting, or single shots, but the bulls*** that goes on u see everyday. Thats the main reason i'm apathetic about cs, its just a quick frag for me. Q3 doesnt hold much appeal, i never finished the game. And dont for a second think there isn't cheats in Q3, someone that's well known from sydney uses a recompiled q3 exe with an aimbot. |

go and install beta 3.1 of CS. check how good the recoil, and speed of the game were, FAST. you ran faster with knife, with was a big debate, but i think it was the most popular beta for fun/size of download/fast/recoil/maps, and netcode(not cable only) |

As author of the original BigKid post (not Rob's, the one before it) telling of the Summerblue article, I have to disagree with Rob slightly. While I acknowledge CS is a game, it is also slightly more than that. Apart from people playing it professionally or semi-professionally, it claims to be a reasonably accurate simulation. That, as well as the team based gameplay, is CS's major difference to other shooters. In the light of this, Gooseman's statement in response to Summerblue that people who want "pinpoint aiming" should play Q3 and UT is pretty lame. Q3 and UT don't claim to be anything like the real world, yet they have better physics! If id and Epic got it right, there's no reason Valve can't. With respect for the enormous amount of work Gooseman has done to make CS what it is, I still have to say his argument sounds suspiciously defensive. Bad coding is bad coding. It can't be that difficult to fix. It's true everyone has to contend with the same problems, but that is no reason not to fix them. Being spread across the wall due to better play is not nearly as frustrating as being nailed because the 30-round clip from your M4 which just passed through and around your enemy at point blank range did less damage than the single frantic bullet from his Glock. It's bad enough you were killed. Dying because of an engine fault is inane. To say the discrepencies don't matter doesn't hold water I'm afraid. If they don't matter, why not make the entire thing random and remove the skill element altogether? CS is a competitive FPS. Winning or losing should as much as possible be due to skill, not some arbitrary coding glitch. |
