In a bizarre start to the New Year, Slightly Mad Studios CEO Ian Bell Tweeted the company's plans to release a standalone home console called the "Mad Box". Slightly Mad Studios is the developer behind the Project CARS series and, to our knowledge, has never had a hand in console development.

As per the report over at Gamesindustry.biz, Bell also gave up a number of details surrounding the "Mad Box" after his initial Tweet, revealing the console would be the most "powerful ever built", that it would support 4K and VR at 60fps "per eye" and would be compatible with current VR headsets such as Oculus and HTC Vive. According to Bell, the console will be aimed at a market release in roughly three years and will be as powerful as a high-end PC two years from now, in terms of performance. He also said it will be priced in line with the likes of PlayStation and Xbox in terms of whatever their next-gen consoles will be, but that they wouldn't be pitching for exclusives from developers. He later told Variety that "we think the industry is a little too much of a monopoly or a micro oligopoly. We think competition is healthy and we have the required hardware contacts to be able to bring something epic to fruition based on our designs."

Is there room for another console that will essentially be a high-end PC? Is Slightly Mad err... slightly mad?

Time will tell...
