But it will still allegedly feature zombies. At least that's what a report over at Polygon suggests, where they also go on to explain that an anonymous source told them the campaign was shaping up as not being ready for the game's release date and so development shifted to "expanding multiplayer".

If this is true, it could mark a shift in how Call of Duty is approached from a development sense. Much of the community and media over the years have suggested Call of Duty become a persistent online multiplayer-focused game, in similar fashion to the likes of Overwatch or Team Fortress, with updates, seasons and events, rather than an annual release from different studios.

Moreover, Treyarch has become the A-Team for the series over the past number of years, so having them kick off any such shift would make sense. Ideally then, you could form a dedicated Call of Duty content team and just support the game with a decent monetisation plan while also freeing up other studios to go onto new projects to finally expand Activision's relatively small stable.

If you add to this that both Sledgehammer Games co-founders Michael Condrey and Glen Schofield have left Sledgehammer to take up executive roles with Actvision itself, then you can see more than a few dots to be joined.

However, "grain of salt" and all of that. What we do know is that there will be a reveal event happening around the game, officially, next month. So until then we'll just have to wait, see and ponder.

A major component of the FPS market is single player only. I know retarded right, but that's the way it is. No campaign means losing sales. It's just lazy imo, they are just wanting to save on voice actors, script writers. Campaign is also a great way to market the game with viral video.

But.... BF2 was no campaign (I think) and did hella well.
