Makers of RGB-flavoured peripherals and awesome gaming laptops, Razer has taken a surprising but not all-that surprising dive into the smartphone market with the announcement of the Razer Phone. The new Android smartphone will feature a number of impressive bits of audiovisual tech including a 120 Hz display and front-facing Dolby Atmos speakers.

And it doesn't stop there with the Razer Phone also set to include an audiophile-grade 24-bit digital audio converter (DAC) perfect for entertainment and games. Rounding out the tech is the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform, 8GB of RAM, dual rear 12 MP cameras, and a large 4,000 mAh battery.

“It’s common knowledge that I’m obsessed with my smartphones, I play a ton of games on them, and they’re my go-to for streaming content,” said Razer Co-Founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan. “We have wanted to make a phone with gaming-level tech for years, and the Razer Phone delivers in every way we imagined.”

Mobile games are currently being optimized for Razer Phone’s display with frame rates of up to 120 frames per second. No local release date or price-point has been set but the Razer Phone is set to debut in 2018 for $699.99 USD.

Sort of reminds me of... that's a really ugly phone. But I guess it could be a function over form thing.

I really don't understand the point of wasting all that space on speakers for a phone. I can't think of many situations you'd be in where you weren't just better off using headphones instead of annoying the s*** out of everyone around you.

Front facing speakers are great, they sound brilliant. Having owned HTC phones for ages I find it really hard to use phones without front facing speakers now. Its not like you sit out in public using the speakers being a cock head (there's a time and place for everything).

try going to the US of A, walking around playing your music is totally common in many places. I also have no need of front-facing speakers.

I was kinda looking forward to this but it's a little disappointing overall. I think they could have made a solid nerd phone with a bunch of really awesome features & justified a larger size by the bigger battery alone. I still want a headphone jack. I like the idea of ludicrous amounts of RAM (though will that have a bigger effect on battery life?). I like that it has an SD card slot. But have almost no interest in the gameplaying features. No wireless charging and no waterproofing - I don't care about that really but seems weird to ditch the 3.5" jack and not waterproof?

Overall nice to see a new phone from another hardware company but not something I'm interested in.

I mean, I like high refresh rates, but for mobile gaming? Less input lag is great and all, but content and competitive players that are looking for an edge probably need to come first before a spec like that.

The speakers and DAC are good I suppose.

Other than that, the rest is kinda unremarkable, and probably for double the price (or more) of the OnePlus 5, which has the exact same SOC and the same 8GB of ram.

Kudos for throwing their hat in the ring though, hopefully they hit a better spot in future iterations.
