Apart from the fact that the game will feature thousands of different arm and fighter combinations, we now know what modes will ship with the game. Plenty! Including matches where two teams of two can battle it out whilst trying to avoid hitting each other, mini-games that provide a spin on stuff like beach volleyball and basketball, and several online modes including ranked play.

It's clear that Nintendo has put a lot of effort into Arms, a game that based on our earlier play-test this year, feels like it could have the depth of some of the better known fighting games out there. The unique controls and 3D arenas pave the way for several strategies that can vary wildly even with the same fighter. Today's Nintendo Direct goes through most of the fighters in detail showcasing all the different arms and play-styles on offer, focusing on the different grades and speeds of various arms and the elemental and special modifiers they come equipped with.

Split-screen will be available, allowing for co-op through the single-player 'climbing the ranks' mode in addition to teaming up for online play. One multiplayer mode in particular, called Party sounds very cool as it creates a lobby for up to 20 players (or 10 Nintendo Switches) and then runs multiple battles and modes simultaneously.

Ahead of the game's launch on June 16 Nintendo will also be holding a beta test dubbed the Global Testpunch. Like with Splatoon before it, this will run at specific times, with the AEST timetable listed below.

  • 27/05 10:00 AEST
  • 27/05 22:00 AEST
  • 28/05 04:00 AEST
  • 28/05 10:00 AEST
  • 28/05 22:00 AEST
  • 29/05 04:00 AEST
  • 03/06 10:00 AEST

  • 04/06 10:00 AEST
  • 04/06 22:00 AEST

We'll more details once they're made available. Oh, and we almost forgot. The game is also set to get free content in the form of new fighters, maps, and of course, arms, as part of the post-release plan.
