As rumoured yesterday, 2K have confirmed that they and Gearbox software have been working on finishing up Duke Nukem Forever, and that it will be shipping next year for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3:
“Hail to the king, baby! It's unbelievable, it kicks ass and it's totally going to happen!” said Randy Pitchford, president of Gearbox Software, "Gearbox has enabled die-hard key Duke Nukem franchise builders and skilled veteran game makers to stand together and deliver. All gamers deserve a happy ending and after all of us gamers feeling the full range of emotions about Duke Nukem Forever, I am thrilled to be in a position with the trust, power and means to make it happen. Am I crazy? Balls of steel, baby, balls of steel!”
A single new image accompanies the release, which you can check out here.

No doubt more information will be made available; apparently they are going to have a playable demo available at PAX (which is, I believe, the first time the game has been made playable for the public in all its years of development). There's also an interview with Randy Pitchford from Gearbox where it is mentioned that they're currently in the polishing phase, which indicates that the bulk of the game is finally finished.

Broussard seems pretty happy about it, but weeting from home watching the live stream, not even at the reveal. Kind of odd that whatever deal has eventuated has seemingly left him and Miller out of the final development process considering how much of their lives must have been sunk into this. Guess whatever final pay day they've settled on is pretty damn good.

After a bit more of a look around, it seems like there's a bit more to announce in that respect. Looks like a few of the ex 3drealms guys have ended up over at gearbox. There a panel on the final day of PAX that will supposedly explain more and includes John St John (voice of duke).

Scott Miller was at PAX and Joe Seigler (3d realms community manager) is now a moderator over on the gearbox forums with the title "Duke Community Manager'.

All the duke forums at 3drealms have been closed and point to gearbox forums.

I'm not suprised George Broussard has been left out, from some of the post mortems I read when 3d realms and DNF originally went under, it sounds like the 13 years of development with no end product to show was pretty much entirely his fault.

hands-on preview at shacknews

The demo opened up with Duke relieving himself at a urinal and you find Duke in a football stadium. After some cool scripted events following soldiers, Duke finds himself up against the Cycloid Emperor from Duke Nukem 3D. Devastator in hand, Duke defeats the boss and kicks his eye through the uprights. Credits roll and the camera pulls back to find that Duke was playing the game on a wall-mounted TV, while two women--ahem--take care of him.

This will be banned in Australia I reckon. If the game is anything like that trailer that was described anyway.

I'll call it now: This will be on Steam and subject to a horrendous amount of Aussie Tax. Mind you that's just the same as saying the sun will come up tomorrow, but still.

They should just announce pre-orders from today. There'd be enough retards out there who would go for that.

Heh, correct, assuming that it's actually released. However DNF actually being released is at the polar opposite end of the certainty spectrum to the sun coming up tomorrow.

Hell, they're taking pre-orders for Natural Selection 2 so why not? I wonder if any bookies have odds on which one will come out first, if either, at all.

The "pre-order" is the modern angel venture investor. Why do you need an investor to fund your development when your idea is so well known in the gaming community you can just say "pre-order!" and the fans will swoop holding fistfuls of cash!?

Ahh Duke3D. Brings back memories of cutting school in year 11/12, going back to my place where we'd have our 4 pc's set up in my lounge and into the kitchen linked up with bnc for some FFA or 2 on 2action. Every now and then someone would bump the cable and you'd lose connection and you were like "OMG wiggle the cable! wiggle the cable!"

Good times. Bring on the new Duke.

Haha, or when someone would have to leave and you'd have to wait while the unplugged and terminated the link again.

Interesting... Half of the kids playing in those trailers didn't even look like they would have been born when Duke3D was out :)

The gameplay looked fairly standard, Guess we'll have to see what they do with it. Part of Dukes biggest selling points oh so long ago was that it was a step up from doom in the graphics, level, movement department.

Then Quake came out with true polygon 3D instead of sprites.
Or my memory on the time line could be all wrong.

I played Duked 3D with my mate over modem.

I was really annoyed whenever someone at home wanted to use the phone, and I hated anyone that called because it disconnected our game :)

Mannnnn 1996 it has been a while since 3D. Trainspotting was the sickest movie ever, 9/11 was a random date, and the backstreet boys were not back yet.

I wont be surprised if it is just your generic FPS game with the iconic duke. A lot has changed since D3D.

There's a little bird that lives around my place. He often seeks shelter on my balcony and will even venture inside to peck around the kitchen for crumbs. We can be sitting there on the couch watching TV, and he'll just hop on in through the door, strut past us and have a look in the kitchen. We really want a pet, but can't have one due to body corporate by-laws, so we're going to get little food and water bowls made up for the bird. The bird comes and goes of his own volition, so it's not like we have actively acquired and kept a pet.

We call him Duke. This is because his markings look like he's wearing a little tuxedo. And he has BALLS OF STEEL.

True story.

Not gonna happen dude, atleast, i don't think so. It seems this game should have been out in around 2004. When you think about it, it's still only running a "Heavily Modified" Unreal 2 engine.

But this doesn't worry me, i've been waiting for this game as long as i can remember and it better well be out soon.

that sounds like a rumour; your link is busted so I can't verify the source, but I have not heard anything about this (unless it was just revealed over the weekend)

I'm suprised they aren't bumping it to Unreal engine 3, I guess maybe they just want to get it out instead of spending even more time on a game with such a sordid history, but if its already using a modified Unreal 2 engine, the jump to 3 might not be so difficult.

^ Spelling and grammar fail.

Considering the amount of publicity this game has garnered over the decade and this year, I'm pretty sure this game will make its publisher a tidy profit.

Be interesting to see if its gonna be a good game or not. Expectations are high but will probably be shattered which seems to be the trend at the moment for me with games.

Hangin for a new decent game to come out.
