Following several months of on-and-off development, we're proud to unveil the new version of the AusGamers website!

While the older style has served us faithfully for many years, it was long overdue for a refit, so we've taken the time to give it a flash new look as well as sneaking a bunch of neat new features:
  • Improved interaction - we've made it a lot easier for new people to get involved in the AusGamers community.
  • Improved search - a new and improved search system for our extensive files archive is the first of several search improvements.
  • Improved performance - we've completely overhauled the codebase and have moved to much, much faster hardware.
  • More games content - we've expanded our already-massive games database to include more information, more screenshots, and more videos.
  • More contributors - we're getting more people on board to help grow our editorial coverage to keep you informed. Interested? Let us know.
  • New competitions - a brand new competition system will be giving you more opportunities to win some awesome prizes - starting today.
  • More information - new modules on the front page show you what is popular on AusGamers, right across the board.
  • Updated forums - we're expanding on our popular gaming forums with a variety of other topics.

As part of the goings-on, we're also running a survey to find out more about AusGamers visitors and the Australian gamer in general. While we're sure that everyone would be falling over themselves to fill it out anyway, to sweeten the deal we're also running a competition for anyone that enters.

All you have to do is fill out the survey, pop over the competition page, answer just one more question - and then if your answer is awesome enough, you could win an Xbox 360 console, courtesy of.. well, us. The two runner-up entries will each receive a Nintendo DS as well.

As always with any new release there are a few bugs; we're aware of most of them but if you find any please feel free to let us know. We're also interested in feedback, so hit up the comments and tell us what you think.

We've still got a lot of other improvements and updates planned for the immediate future, but for now we'd like to take the time to thank everyone that continues to visit AusGamers regularly and contributes to the awesome gaming ecosystem that we have here. We have a bunch of good stuff coming so stay tuned!

Known issues (I will populate this as people report):

- RSS doesn't work
- screenshots link in menu doesn't work
- some links go to the wrong spot
- some reviews still have old content or broken screenshots

it has me in an endless loop i can't get out of

this page: http://www.ausgamers.com/competitions/index.php/AusGamers-Survey-Competition/Enter

says "It would appear that you have not yet completed the survey.
Please click here to complete the survey."

I click there and it says on an otherwise empty page: Thank you for taking the survey

I click on competitions up the top, it now doesn't say that i haven't completed the survey, but when I "click here to enter" it takes me back to that original link complaining about me not having done the survey.

Negative, sorry :) If you screw up your entry or want to edit it or something you can contact us and I'll change it for you.

Note that we're taking the competition seriously - if you come up with a good suggestion chances are you'll not only win, but we'll build it too!

Now we know why you were so keen on the forum themes discussion.
Needs more torrents for the larger files (1GB+), ie Cinematic Mod v7.0.

s***e, I forgot to enter

Hey Trog - quick question about the survey:

2. What sections of the AusGamers site do you use the most?

under the news section, are we supposed to choose 1 because we see it here on the forum anyway? or does it only count if we go to the AG site?

22. What is your employment status?

this only allows one choice..

24. What other gaming websites do you use, either regularly or occasionally?

go to town with the options here. you prolly should add OCAUs gaming forum as an option. Agg deserves some credit. Come to think of it, so does TOG

I'd say it counts if you read it on the forum as well

I get the same problem as natslovR

"it has me in an endless loop i can't get out of

this page: http://www.ausgamers.com/competitions/index.php/AusGamers-Survey-Competition/Enter

says "It would appear that you have not yet completed the survey.

Fixed it!

Changed my Ausgamers account email address to the same as the one I submitted at the end of the survey, my gmail account.

So, I'm thinking you should investigate holding on to the page the user was last viewing when they log in.

ie.

I fill in the survey, get e-mail, open e-mail link, it prommpts me to log in, I get sent back to the front page, now can't enter competition.

If you were able to set up so that once I logged in, it went to the "enter competition" page, that would be good.

Yeh, that's happening a lot, I don't know what we can do about it. The problem is (I think) because some douchebags were sending out AusGamers account spam/phishing emails a while back.

As I was writing the copy for that email I was thinking "this reads exactly like spam/phishing" (even mentioned it to the guys) :(

Troggles I noticed in IE6 i'm getting an error: 'WebFXMenu' is undefined.

I assume this is the cause of no top menu...

Did you try the things the other guys tried and make your ausgamers account email address same as what you used to do the survey?

edit: obviously you shouldn't need to, but pending us fixing it it seems to be the fastest workaround

It isnt the same e-mail account... I'm not complaining, I'm advising you of a bug.

I'm not concerned about the competition, I thought you might like to address the issue so other users don't have the same problems.

problems with the forums on ausgamers

any screenshots wider than the thread go out of it instead of having a scrollbar
the ausgamers files/reviews/news/videos/blah/blah dissapears when you go to the main forum or sub forums, but appears again when you go into threads

the new site sure does look swish, however the top half of a page still looks like a giant ad' fest,

i know there is only 1 ad, but all the inhouse ad's for reviews/comps/downloads makes it messy and rather annoying.
what im trying to say is at first glance i thought i was looking at a bunch of ad's basically.

other then that the site is great on the eyes and very easy to navigate.

oh and it loads so quickly, ooohh the quickness.

You guys need to hire a graphic design person or whoever the f*** is good at dealing with Typography because using that one font for all text really detracts from the nice clean layout you are using now.

Two other things which I think would help streamline content.

Using a mouseover box for website content ads. So you have a single, wider box with mouseover buttons to show different boxes. The boxes across the top with the offsite ad making a bunch of them shorter than the first looks crap IMO.

Other issue is the way images are implemented into news items. Something about it rubs me wrong, that just might be me though... I have no idea what you could do to fix it cause Im not 100% why it seems off but IMO it is :P

But I think its got A LOT of potential, its miles ahead of the previous style.

edit: Just looking at it again, I think its got something to do with the text getting within a couple pixels of the images in some items and possibly the fact that items are so unsplit within each day, they kind of blend weirdly to me... I think you could split them up more than they are now but maintain the major focus on day by day splitting.

Does splitting by day even really matter that much?

Ah jeez i just re-read the t&c of the comp..I reckon mine is slightly over 50 words..forgive me oh trog one.

P.S if it hasn't already been mentioned the piece of text 'more' under 'latest threads' on the right hand side bar links to the files section instead of the forums.
