My lead at work showed me this the other day, it's pretty cool. It took me a minute or so, but I managed to see it going both ways.

It was only clockwise for me...

Now it's stuck anticlockwise after I did the feet thing.

Stare at the body for a bit then concentrate on the legs./feet

If I look directly at it it's always going clockwise. It will go anticlockwise if I look slightly to the side and out of focus but I can't get it to stay that way. Weird

Cool, so it's actually possible to see it spinning anti-clockwise at first. 4 people I asked all had difficulty seeing it anything but clockwise, while the article says the majority should see it spinning anti-clockwise.

Still a majority right-sided softies though... :P

peripheral vision (looking way to the side) and watching the leg go around is the only way I can get it to spin anti-clockwise.. and as soon as I look directly at the dancer again, she spins the other way. Frustrating and weird.

This is while at the same time my girlfriend's staring at the dancer making her change direction every few seconds.

I wonder if it really does have any deep correlation to brain function.... freaky nonetheless.

Yeah, I had the same thing, but the opposite way around. I saw it clockwise and couldn't see it as anything else. Then I scrolled down a bit and when I scrolled back up it was going anti-clockwise!

Edit: Ok now its going clockwise again and I can't get it to go anti-clockwise anymore. This is madness!

Watch the hands, it spins clock wise for a while then the gif switches it to spinning to anticlockwise.. I think.. it could be my mind playing tricks

An easy way to see the opposite direction is to block off the whole girl with your hands, and just look at her foot. Try to imagine her foot spinning the other way!!

its quite possible that the gif is just on a timer to spin each way for a certain amount of time
I was able to make it go both ways, but it always looked as though it stopped and started again - leading me to believe its a HOAX ON THE INTERNETS

Well I pulled it apart using animation shop.

34 frames. No ruse. 1-34 repeat indefinately.
Strangely if I slow the animation down I can see it go anti-clockwise.

first it was clock-wise, now its stuck on anti-clockwise and i can't change it =(

try focusing on the shadow her foot makes if it's stuck on clockwise, that's what did it for me

It goes clockwise and anticlockwise for me, depending on when I look at it. If I sit down and try and clear my mind and not think anything I can get it to switch directions. It takes me from 1-10 seconds to switch it when I'm not trying too hard.

If you watch when the nipples appear / disappear, the animation can only be going clockwise.

Looking at it normally it tends to go anti clockwise. Can switch it by looking at the foot to get it going anti clockwise, the shadow on the ground to make it go clockwise. Can make it switch on every rotation that way so not a trick with the gif.

Reversed ...

ah.. yeh that's interesting. Now I can't get it to go clockwise.

I wonder if it's reversed for the one or two people who saw the original going anti clockwise, too.

I'm pretty satisfied that it's pretty meaningless... cool visual trick though.

oh man.. now they're affecting eachother... both are changing to clockwise, then both are changing to anti-clockwise, depending on which one I look at.. haha

edit: ok, that was when they were placed vertically... could be interesting to move the frames so that the mirrored animation starts at frame 17

I have seen this before and never once seen it go anticlock... until the normal and reversed ones were stuck side by side.

The one on the left suddenly changed direction after about 5 sec.

Just scrolled back up and it was clockwise for about 2 sec then popped back to anti. The right one won't seem to change no matter what I do though.

Sneaky f***er on the right just changed on me finally!

Forget about looking at the feet. It's all about the shadow. If when you first look you focus on the shadow you see anti clockwise. If you only look at the chick and ignore the shadow you see clockwise. I can see it both ways by doing this really quickly.

i think if u see it anyway other then clockwise, you should accept the fact you are brain damaged and kill yourself now. (or go watch resident evil) both will cause a similar effect.

I can make it do like Half a turn Anti-CLockwise if I focus on the Gap bwtween her Foot and her Shadow...

But as soon as the other leg sweeps around it's back to clockwise.

Also, I now have a Headache :(

That article is rubbish, I remember looking at these things in uni. That left/right list is useless if you're left handed, and even for right handers its much closer to "use the other side of the brain, man" pop psychology crap than scientific fact (unless you've had your corpus callosum removed).

The animation is basically a very fancy Necker cube (Phooks's picture). One interesting thing I remember that came out of studies done by a researcher at UQ was that with normal people the images consistently flip every few minutes (sometimes a bit longer), but people with bipolar disorder would get stuck with one interpretation for several hours or even days. The theory being that having one side dominant for too long would lead to mania or depression depending on which side, but normally the switches occur often enough that there isn't a problem.

To the people saying its a hoax or assume its the animation order in the gif changing... it's not.
There are 34 frames that go 1-34 Indefinately. It at no point reverses or "ping pongs".

Its an optical illusion. Your brain is doing the trickery not the gif.
