I gotta get a laptop for uni this year, primarily to just store the results and make graphs and s*** like that. However, i would like to be able to play games on it, and it have most of the modern functions, such as a dvd player, wireless internet ect... Anyone know of any decent places that don't rip you off when it comes to laptops? or can recommend any? Is harvey norman alright?

not if you're going to say "dell" instead of the correct answer, "ibook".

You know what the best part about recommending ibooks to friends and family is? When they have problems, you just say "oh I don't know anything about Macs" and get them to call the Apple helpdesk. HAHAHA

Then they'll just ask you why the hell you suggested an ibook trog. When my friend has a problem now I just tell him "format" I'm sick of being everyones tech guy.

Also no, I wouldn't go to harvey normans, they tend to be pricey imho. Isn't there some place called laptop world or something somewhere?

If you want a laptop capable of games, be prepared to pay for it, make sure it comes with either an nvidia or ati onboard, my toshiba has some intel video card that plays cs 1.6 okish but for anything else its quite the suck. Mind you, it is pretty old.

i looking for a new laptop too. my first move was to consult the dell website. to my horror they are flogging out all their decent laptops with Vista (admittedly no surprise.) Even in the customize package it didnt offer xp :(

I think im going to grab an asus laptop from Computer Alliance if it helps Jabroney

Umm, dunno if this helps but I recently picked up a Clevo 570u from affordablelaptops.com.au - very impressed with service, price and performance so far.

Sure it cost a few calls to Perth, but they did deliver overnight and it has been flawless so far - even does the odd game ok (has 512 meg 7950 gtx built in)

and the 17" wuxga screen is worth the extra bucks.

Dunno if it's out of your budget, but they have a good range, and Jeff was excellent to do business with.

Just my $0.02 worth, as a happy customer

Cheers,

good god man, I dont want to be offensive but why did you go a Clevo? I swear you will see them in Aldi next.

I have heard horrible things about them is all, but if yours works, two thumbs up.

Our Dell account manager has confirmed that we can still get XP until the end of 2007.. maybe give them a call?

Then you just say "because they're pretty and I thought you'd like it because you obviously don't know anything about computers"
