Two Planes Crash into World Trade Center
Two Crashes Occur Within 18 Minutes, Both Towers Ablaze

Sept. 11 — Two planes have crashed into the two towers of the World Trade Center within 18 minutes of each other, igniting blazes in upper floors that sent smoke billowing out over lower Manhattan. There were no immediate reports of how many were injured or the extent of damages.

Witnesses told WABC that the first plane seemed to try to avoid the northern tower, 1 World Trade Center, but could not, plowing into the top floors of the north side of the northern-most tower.
As television camera crews filmed the billowing black smoke, a second plane, which appeared to be a Boeing 737, flew toward the towers from the west and crashed into the southern tower, 2 World Trade Center, about 20 to 25 floors from the top.

The witnesses described the first plane as a small twin-engine passenger jet. The witnesses said it appeared that most of the jet stuck inside the building.

"Papers were billowing down and it looked like the wing crashed down to the street causing a panic on the highway and cars hit each other. People were in a panic. Things look in better control now," a witness from the Dow Jones offices in the neighboring World Financial Center said.

There was no immediate word on injuries or fatalities in the twin disasters, which happened shortly before 9 a.m. and then right around 9 a.m.

Police, fire and emergency personnel were already on the scene attempting to deal with the first disaster when the second plane struck.

"The plane was coming in low and ... it looked like it hit at a slight angle," said Sean Murtagh, a CNN vice president, the network reported.

Large holes were visible in sides of the 110-story buildings, landmark twin towers, which were struck by terrorist bombers in February 1993.

The tops of the twin towers were obscured by the smoke.

Thousands of pieces of what appeared to be office paper came drifting over Brooklyn, about three miles from the tower, one witness said.

The World Trade Center bombing on Feb. 26, 1993, left six people dead and injured more than 1,000 others.

In 1945, an Army Air Corps B-25, a twin-engine bomber, crashed into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building in dense fog.

You got to remeber that those buildings weigh at least several hundred tons so having a 100 ton max plane crash into it doesn't have as big an effect as you'd think. Plus the walls are are basicly glass/fibro so not much of the force would bend the beams, it looked like stuff wen out the other side on the second one.

I don't believe this, some of you are laughing about this! America sticks it's nose where it isn't wanted, but no one deserves this.
This is apalling, totally, totally out of my comprehension. I'm not a mindless American-lover, but this is completly without precedent or warrant. Apalling.
Several people have phoned freinds and family while in the air during the hijacking. Trapped police, firefighters and civilians are calling and phoning for help from UNDER the rubble of the Towers. Over 80 Police officers and over 300 Firefighters are missing, persumed dead after the first tower North Tower collapsed. Shortly after, the South Towr did also. It was like a fuking movie. Approximatly 800 are missing, presumed dead at the Pentagon. Over 250 in the 4 planes. Over 50,000 work at the Towers.
This is an apalling loss of life. To quote Prime Minister John Howard, this is "an act of bastadry, and we hope the people are hunted down, and get the justice they so much deserve".
My mother, someone who is quite happy to put refugees back on the boats and tow them back out to sea, said that while she was at work today, all she wanted to do was cry.
Even my late father, a man capable of infinate forgivness, would support some kind of retalliation.
I learnt of this tradegy while at work, midnight. We rigged up a radio, followed by an old TV, so we could find out what was hapenning. The first piece of footage I saw after getting home was of the Towers collapsing. If Bush declares war on terrorism, this will become a type of asymetrical warfare (attack the weak underbelly, the home front, while America launches the high-tech missiles). Can America win this war? I don't pray, but if I did, my prayers would be going out to the Americans.
I have been trying to work out the possable casualties:
4 commuter planes - 250+
Police - 80+
Firefighters - 300+
Penatgon - 800+
At least one person was killed on the ground by debris from the planes.
The Towers however, are a different story. About 50000 people work in the two towers. All but about one or two thousand would work during the daytime, that leaves 48000 or so. The attack happened slightly before full rush hour, so probably half of those would have actually been at work, that leaves 24000. The planes struck the Towers about halfway, to 2/3 the way up, in the `penthouse' type offices would have been, so about 2/3 of the people would have been below the impact point, that leaves 8000 trapped above the impact point. So we are looking at an MINIMUM estimated NINE AND A HALF THOUSAND casualities. This is totally beyone my comprehension. Completly devestating.
