theyre extending the free downloads from 2am-8am for another month...then in april it will be 12gig peak / 24gig off peak (2-8). I was expecting 12/12 so im pretty happy with new plans...alot better than telstra who are now bringing in automatic capping at 10gig. You get capped if you exeed either limit, but i wont be doing that so no biggy

Oh yeah!!!

This is why Optus is the best for broadband. Fast speed, reliable and a good download cap.

Broadband is cable. I wouldn't class ADSL as it, unless they're getting 600K a sec.

I thought "Broadband" was any speed over 256k/s or something? Either way, all DSL is Broadband you stupid fanboy :P

As far as the *legal* use of the term 'broadband' in Australia, it only has to be 64kbps. Anything above that they can call 'broadband'.

give it time, then you'll understand that it is easy to go over 10 gig.

I'm on optus broadband atm and loving it. What's the peak speed of Cable anyway? I have no idea. I heard cable takes a big speed dive if lots of people in your hood are dling htrough it at the same time. "upto 100times faster when surfing australian sites" isn't very informative.

So, what is Optus Cable's max speed, and likely speed during peak hours?

I honestly dont know why people can think that 10 gig is only warez. Its the most stupid assumption I beleive ive witnesssed.

Here is a simple list of things I might download that are completly legal during each month.

Mp3's (Yes the legal ones)
Movies (Amature movies)
AMV's (Anime music videos that are compiled from free release anime)
Anime (Japanese animation)
Comics (Usally about 10meg each)
Streaming Audio (I think its about 20kB/s and usally for about two hours each day)
Movie trailers (about three a month possibly more)
Webpages with high amounts of media and flash animations ( new grounds ect)
Gamming (From 5kB/s HL2 ect to 25kB/s-50kB/s flight sims/mmorpg's for about 10 hours a week)
Programming source code and 'add ins' usally about 5-10meg a project and add ins can reach up to 60meg each
ISO's (probably two a month - Linux and free iso collections like cookbooks or random things the GF needs)
E-MAIL (around about 100meg of email a week from work and attachments ect)
Game Updates (each month about 200meg of updates for all my games rolls in)
New applications freeware and shareware (about 100meg a week)
Pictures (1,000's each week. I collect big and small since i love photography)
Trolling (I must browse over 50 forums regularly 20 of wich require login, im sure it adds up? say 50meg a week)
QGL Spoot (god only knows...)
SETI @ HOME and other RSA factoring progs (xbox ect) (many megs a week!)

The list goes on... seriously, that was off the top of my head in under one minute. Anyone paying for cable and not using it either works to hard and doesnt spend enough time using there connection for things they love or doesnt need cable in the first place. Either way I think 10 gig is apawling and I cant beleive telstra still thinks it can go on like this cap-> uncap-> cap-> uncap-> cap-> uncap... Ive been with telstra cable since it was TRUE unlimited... for what I beleive has been 9 years and telstra as an ISP while maintaining its QOS -JUST- has constantly been growing tighter and tigher with its hands around its customers necks because it doesnt want to outlay more money, wich it fair enough but in the end it has to have a future proof plan. Copper wire is forgotton the time is here for wireless and optical communitation. Organisations such as PIPE and WAIX are revolutionizing Australia's internet and its all happening despite telstra's monopoly... just very slowly. Sooner or later telstra is going to have to splash money and with it does I hope it does it in a way that allows free Peer to Peer systems like the inner-state linking of ISP's for PIPE and WAIX related programs to go ahead. Eventually a company will lay fibre in a vital place finally allowing NSW to join PIPE and SA to join WAIX and there will be a national network of FREE data. Anyone that has been on PIPE or WAIX especially will know how powerfull these services are and that if a small time ISP doesnt connect to a free data network it will lose alot of customers.

Thank you for that information mate.

(been waiting to use that one)

Mp3's (Yes the legal ones) - maybe. i have downloaded a couple

Movies (Amature movies) - unless you mean the little clips / shorter than 10min i doubt there is actually much out there at all.

AMV's (Anime music videos that are compiled from free release anime) - nfi
Anime (Japanese animation) - nfi on legalities
Comics (Usally about 10meg each) - ok
Streaming Audio (I think its about 20kB/s and usally for about two hours each day) - ok, also get more than that some days.
Movie trailers (about three a month possibly more) - good
Webpages with high amounts of media and flash animations ( new grounds ect) - good
Gamming (From 5kB/s HL2 ect to 25kB/s-50kB/s flight sims/mmorpg's for about 10 hours a week) - good
Programming source code and 'add ins' usally about 5-10meg a project and add ins can reach up to 60meg each - good
ISO's (probably two a month - Linux and free iso collections like cookbooks or random things the GF needs) - Thats fair enough, but the dips***s who are like "oh i download 20 LINUX iso's off hte month i need 50 gb seriously im not lying linux isos ok pls" can get f***ed. I dont know why they even pretend.
E-MAIL (around about 100meg of email a week from work and attachments ect)
Game Updates (each month about 200meg of updates for all my games rolls in)
New applications freeware and shareware (about 100meg a week)
Pictures (1,000's each week. I collect big and small since i love photography) - picture sites are cool i guess and i have been using them more and more lately.

Trolling (I must browse over 50 forums regularly 20 of wich require login, im sure it adds up? say 50meg a week)
QGL Spoot (god only knows...)
SETI @ HOME and other RSA factoring progs (xbox ect) (many megs a week!)

Most of this stuff is fine but the majority of bandwidth used by people here is proably.
Tv shows / games / movies / music / gaming etc. and i am sure that most people that use over 10gig regularly probably do not get everything 100% legal. I am sure it is POSSIBLY to do it.. but i am betting against it.

I am on a 64gb plan btw.. i am just bored because i know people love bulls***ting about why they need such high data allowances and justify fake reasons. (not you specifically)

It's a good thing I'll be getting at least 750KB/s on my soon-to-be-installed ADSL line .. don't want to miss out on 'broadband'.

Oh yeah, and 40GB/month quota :)

Well we've got the best marketing scheme in the world, nowhere else can a country pull of saying 256k is broadband.

I just wish docsis 2 would be implemented soon (for optarse), so sick of the ~16k upload.

Does this mean we can download the latest George Lucas and Kevin Costner movies?

Believe me, when you are on a 3kb/s pair gain dial-up connection anything above 10k/s is broadband... to me anyway.

LoL cant blame Ziggy anymore for Telstra's evil!

A hidden catch is that if the user runs out of peak data, then their connection will be speed limited for the rest of the billing month — in both peak and off peak times. The promotion is slated to run for 12 months, but similar promotions with Optus mobile have been extended multiple times.

hmmm, I have no idea how much i downloaded during the off peak but its quite a lot, hopefully it's not anywhere near 24gig though.

as long as there is some easily accessable DL monitor for the off peaks as well we should be fine.

yer i am on pair gain... hence no adsl.. does pair gain affect dial-up speed ?? cos i reckon my dial-up speed has always been arse (more so than others).

going to 24gig a month will be a step back from the 2gig a night at the moment, but will still be plenty. I've been hoarding movies and tv shows incase they took away all extra data usage

^^ rofl same.

my mission at the start of the off peak announcement was to break Optus and have them rescind the offer. I must obviously now admit defeat :(

It says that if you go over your peak data your peak and off-peak will be capped, but what happens if you go over your off-peak limit?

^^ Thats what i thought it said. Well im guessing you would get capped or just not have off peak and it starts digging into your peak allowance?
