I've seen a few videos of the tsunami. I would be running not on the beach watching the (huge)waves come in. Waves way beyond normal levels is warning enough for me.

P.S. Has anyone seen the video of the base jumper with the helmet camera(on ogrish)?

Someone more helpful and with more braincells other than yourself pointed it to me though.

far out so many dead people... saw those pics from space on TV yesterday...the before and after shots look so f***ed up..well the after shots do anyway :S
and all it take for that kinda devestaion(sp) is for the tectonic plates to move under water...
Sunday's massive tsunami was triggered when a plate of earth that was dug like a bulldozer blade into the ocean floor off the coast of western Indonesia broke through layers of rocky resistance and created a rupture hundreds of miles in length, geologists said.

Once begun, rock would have torn apart like paper. The ocean floor collapsed in places and rose elsewhere, triggering massive upheavals of water. Unlike waves on the surface, a tsunami is an underwater wave whose effects are apparent only when it reaches shore, often hundreds or even thousands of miles away.

The magnitude-9 earthquake moved the entire island of Sumatra about 100 feet toward the southwest, pushing up a gigantic mass of water that quickly collapsed into a tsunami that devastated shorelines around the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea.

It was mentioned on the news the other night as well. NA has a volcano thats due to go off which will cause a tsunami apparently. The volcano is on the south island I think but they said the tsunami would hit mainly around Sydney.

If my geography is correct tho the south island doesnt really line up too much with Sydney.

You don't open the chute... you jump with it open. You can tell when he looks upward and yells that it hasn't caught the wind properly. Heehee

Yeah the media is hyping it up but it is still possibly going to happen.....to the point of this tsunami?....not likely but you never know.

Reasearchers have said the volcano is overdue for an eruption (there are actally several around due to go off). Who know what nature wants to do!

Sounds like the media has no idea. They were spouting this theory about a tidal wave hitting Australia on the news the day the tsunami happened, but at that time it was the Alpine fault that was going to shift (and does so every 500 years), and now its a volcano on the south island?

of course :P

i think its pretty amazing that a lot of the island in the area have moved due to this earthquake aswell as the tip of sumatra. i also read from a geologist that u would have seen the earth shake on its axis from space. the geologist was probably exagerating though :P

Some video's found here http://www.ebaumsworld.com/tsunami.html

satalite images here http://www.fourmilab.ch/earthview/satellite.html

Some good links
http://www.digitalglobe.com/sample_imagery.shtml

Awesome satelite-images. In the one where the water is furthest out, it is 343 meters from the beach. Imagine seeing the water just disappare like that.
There is also a torrent with a few amateur-videos of the tsunami. Crazy stuff.

It was when a volcano basically exploded.

~1890 or something.

Krakatoa went boom, the island disappeared. The whole of the area (i think mainly indonesia as it is now) copped the tsunami from it. Global temperatures dropped like 2-3 degrees for a couple of years afterwards.

The noise was so loud it was rattling windows in like sydney and s***.

Like holy jesus f***, it must have been huge.

Another big one explosion, ~180,000 people apparently died in this one in 1815.

Lifted 100km3 of rock into the air.

Loudest noise ever heard by modern humans, excepting the odd rx7.

Well we are pretty safe here in QLD, if there was a tsunami that hit the east cost the barrier reef would cut it up before it got near the shore.

Probably rip the crap out of the reef but its better than loads of people dying.

i think the effects that the destruction on the reef would have more of an impact on the north eastern coast of queensland than a tsunami would if it hit the land

do you understand how waves work?
They travel underwater til they hit shallow water in the form of the shore or a reef or something then they come up out of the water and you can actually see them. You could have been out to see on a boat and the tsunami would have gone underneith you without you even noticing.

This terrible event got me to thinking how easy it would have been for ancient civilisations to describe a (biblical type) world wide flood with one of these things wiping out most of their known world at the time.

The last figure I saw regarding a deathtoll had it at arround 160,000..it wouldnt surprise me that in the coming weeks, when all the figures are finally realised, if this event hasn't claimed close to 200,000 people.

If you can spare a few $$ then be sure to send in a donation, every little bit will hopefully help these poor people.

THE Australian branch of aid agency Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, Doctors without Borders) has become possibly the first in the world to ask donors to stop pledging money to its tsunami appeal.

The local MSF branch paused its appeal after reaching its $1 million target in just three days. It decided it would be breaching its ethical code to collect money if it could not be used for its designated purpose, a spokeswoman told The Sydney Morning Herald.

"We can only send a certain number of people at a time. We can't rush more over because we have to co-ordinate with MSF teams from other countries," Dorothy Griffiths told the newspaper.

Australia's MSF team has 300 volunteers but so far it has been able to send only one doctor, a nurse and three logistics experts to Sri Lanka, and a doctor and a water sanitation engineer to Indonesia.
