Hi all.

I don't know how many people here use opera as their web browser, but if you do, I'm sure you'll notice that both the qgl homepage and the forums have a horizontal scrollbar on the page.

This seems to be something that only opera does, and it's because the qgl page and the forum are not standards compatible.

The fix for this is to add a line:
!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/strict.dtd"

with appropriate greater than / less than symbols around it (can't get it to display when i put them in).

to the forum html code, as from viewing the source, the page has no doctype.

As for a fix for the www.qgl.org page, it has a doctype, but no url for it. Adding the correct url for this doctype causes opera to display even worse, with the page running way over the horizontal limit.

It is caused by opera having a "quirks" mode that tries to correctly display non-standard pages correctly. In these 2 cases, it fails with the page width display.

I don't know who would be in charge of fixing this, but considering the move away from ie and its vulnerabilities, it may be nice to have pages that format correctly on other popular browsers.

Cheers.

heh, now after doing this - in mozilla I get a horizontal scroll bar whereas before I didn't have one!

Looks fine in IE though. I might change it so that line is only included if the browser is opera.

yeah me too... works on the front thread listing page, but not in the actual posts page.

Well, I guess there is something fundamentally wrong with the code then in terms of its width calcs... as it doesnt work in the actual qgl.org page nor the forum posts page.

So putting it in doesn't fix it for opera users either ?

no, makes it worse... I only checked adding it in for the thread list page, and it fixed the problem there. But that seems to be the only one it fixes, maybe this post reply screen too actually, but the actual thread contents page and the qgl.org page it makes worse.

I'll take a look through the source and see if I can work out why.

While on the topic of Opera, can someone give me a hand here...

This has happened ever since I started using Opera, and I've tried o fix it with no luck... On the Game Arena pages - game forums etc. - I get this error:
JavaScript

---
| ? | Got an error while processing css. The page should still work but
--- might be a bit slower

Do you have any idea trog?

Bargain, its because GA doesn't like Opera, tell Opera to identify as IE6 (F12) and it won't come up anymore :p

Did the fix have anything to do with installing a real browser?

nope, that seems to be the cause of the problem as stated above...

Witty.

Opera is a woman's browser anyway, if you're going to be an advocate of w3c listed standards then I suggest upgrading to Firefox

Edit: Whoops

yeah, what squarky said. On that note, a PDA friendly version of ausforums would be mega sexy :P

I'll have a play with the page tonight, it would probably be good if possible to use a strict doctype, and stick by it.. unfortunately, as sexy as complete standards compliance would be, IE doesnt seem to like that :((

farseeker,

Using the strict doctype is part of my fix.

Wait till trog makes the update with my changes before you take a copy to play with to ensure your version includes my opera changes also.

Thanks

Hmm, seems to break the header graphic a little (edit) in FireFox. Looks ok in IE.

I can't see any of these problems. Is this because I use FireFox?

Edit: Ok now I can see a bit of a the broken header graphic. But other than that I haven't noticed anything.

Are you using AvantGo for the headlines? What page(s) exactly are you trying to read?
Is the change going on the qgl.org page also?

www.qgl.org, i browse it with internet explorer on my ipaq, i can stand the forums being small but the gaybar (or something else? but i'm sure its the bar) adds about 3 blank screen lengths

ok the scroll bar is now gone, but yeah up in the header theres a tiny gap between 2 images. But overall hurrah the scroll is gone!

Is the forum meant to end with a think black line (moreso than the other black lines around the page) then a small blue gap on like 5% on the right side? On the left side its almost right on the edge of the page which im guessing is normal.

Anyone know how to quicken the mouse-scroll rate in firefox? I'd be using it but it takes like three revolutions just to pan down a page

Click, then filter for mouse

Then change mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines to false, and mousewheel.withnokey.numlines to some value you want.

Play around with it till you get it right, i use 4.

well, seeing as this has been revived, i guess i should ask why the changes have been removed and the forum is behaving as it was before this thread was created?

They haven't - atm it checks to see if your browser reports that it is Opera and sets the DOCTYPE thingy if it is. Is it not working?

your post = rude gestures. reviving old threads for useless posts is bad mmkay?
also: trog, sure you haven't done this from the link nF posted: To test this, the User-Agent filed was changed slightly -- from "Opera" to "Oprah".

Unless you've changed your browser settings so it doesn't identify itself as Opera, I can't see why that'd happen

Already checked it.
I can send you the source if you like, but up the top there is no doctype definition at all.

This is the forums pages I'm talking about.

Was hoping that the change could be fixed aswell. Once the change works for you on the forum pages, apply it to the qgl main page too so non-opera users don't have to experience the broken up banner.

and er... would it be possible if you could centre the forums in opera instead of align left? Leaves it uneven on the screen and looks wrong. Also the black line running down the side of the forum, i would have no clue how to fix it, but it looks like a boarder on the table is too big or something. Heres a picture of what i mean.

http://bad.qgl.org/images/opera_black_line.JPG

I know that one isnt a big deal, but it just looks ugly ;P

Also, I upgraded to Opera 7.50 (from 7.11) last night, and now the fonts look odd on the forums.

As they look in I.E, and used to look in Opera 7.11

As they look in 7.50

Any ideas what the issue might be?
