Battle.net is carrying word of Blizzard's heavy-handed (and appreciated, I'm sure) stance on cheating:
Numerous additional accounts and CD keys were tied to the use of a hack or cheat program while playing Warcraft III or Diablo II on Battle.net. In keeping with our aggressive stance against hacks and cheats, we have permanently closed over 12,000 Warcraft III accounts and over 131,000 Diablo II accounts. We have also banned over 7,000 CD keys from ladder play for one month and banned over 1,000 Warcraft III CD keys from ladder play permanently. Please note that repeat offenders risk having their CD keys disabled, which results in permanent removal from Battle.net for their copies of Warcraft III or Diablo II.
That's some good stuff, there. Props to Blizzard for keeping it safe! Check out Battle.net for more information.

That's quite alot of cd keys, man online gaming really bites in the ass :/

Atleast rts players don't have to worry about configgers / netcoders, like playing online cs...

If that freebnet project connected to the servers to authenticate, that would be cool. Unfortunately Blizzard didnt want to cooperate.

It would be quite easy to just plop into the liscencing agreement that if the software is used online, that it MUST connect to the authentication servers. If they dont, they are violating the agreement, and breaking the law.

That would work, but blizzard are stubborn f***s.

The disconnect hack worked for a limited period of time, it doesnt work any more, and afaik everyone who used it got reset...

The only cheat available for wc3 is the maphack, and if your strat relies on the other guy not getting the jump on you, then its a bad strat...

Unless, they get you when your creeping 3 times in a row hey =]

Anyways, map hacks give you an unfair advantage and suck. All ppl who use them and disc hacks should die!!!!!!!!!!!!! =] well maybe hurt a little.

v i s a g e ' Thing is people who use one type of cheat and justify in some way, probably have a higher chance of using another cheat, that they will try and justify as well. DONT USE THEM, asif be a SK and need them...

add to that, blizzard have also decided that 3rd hand proggys that change hot keys (which generally help a s*** load ) will also be considered as hacks.

Obviously people want to change the hotkeys around, to some of us they dont make sense. I dont see why they dont allow people to bind their own hotkeys via an in-game wc3 hotkey menu :/

Blizzard pride their Battle.net it is one of their crowning achievments and the success of their products are definatly influnced by battle.net. Battle.net is almost like Front Counter staff at any store. People will judge the company/game by the survice of their front counter. If the front counter staff only did a half-arsed attempt and were slow, made mistakes, and generally gave the customers a hard time they would have a lower respect for the store and wouldnt buy as many products.
If the mock servers were laggy, randomly up and down, ran by sk's that image will carry over to Blizzard and damage their very very good name.
That would be one of many reasons. Also battle.net is kind of like a fancy IRC that helps you find games. Having a laggy connection to Bnet dosnt mean a laggy game. As blizzards games use peer-2-peer networking with a host. It is your connect to the host that makes it laggy or not, afaik b.net (for wc3) when you click play-game it looks for a game that is a good connection to you, this keeps everyone happy. So having a 2nd battle.net server is pointless,it only serves to divide up the community for no apparent reason, for games like wc3 and diablo-2 specifically, having the community on one servers really adds to the game.
