zammo sends word via the forums that there is a position for an experienced senior games programmer to work for a client in Brisbane:
Must have a proven track record and really be innovative and imaginative.
The company has already developed innovative award winning and hugely successful titles in the past and is steadily becoming a very well respect company within its field.
More details available on application - check out the forum post to find out how to get in contact with him if you're interested.

Hmm, a hotmail address from a guy with one post (sorry if I sound sceptical). Though, I'm sure trog wouldn't make a news post about it if he didn't know the full story.... /me is confused.

Doh, all the game developer jobs I've ever seen advertised ask for experience making games, and yet, how do people get experience making games when all the game developer jobs require experience making games!

Crazy!

You could make a few small games yourself.
You could have done a Game Development Course at a TAFE or something.
You could have read alot about making games online.

I think a good portfolio would be better in this case. Also, knowledge of C/C++ could be easily shown in the 'made my own game' category.

Just my 2 cents.

Experience making games generally means experience making games, not reading about making games or doing some course. Not that I'm saying those things wouldn't help too, but I wouldn't generally class them as experience :)

I was, till I got a job and ended up working long hours. Nobody really seemed interested enough to take it over in the meantime till I had more time free so it pretty much dissolved.

For now I'm working on my own projects, but spare time is hard to come by at times :)

pfft, it doesn't just apply to games. it applies to almost everything. i try to become a technician, they want experience. great, i need to work to get experience. i try to become a sales person, they want experience, great i need experience to get experience.

i wouldn't think you'd find many experienced senior games programmers in brisbane, mainly because the jobs just aren't here. most of the people who would've studied here have either given up or gone off to america, or something similar.

I wouldn't be surprised if there where experianced C/C++ programmers in brisbane who want to get out of there deadend s*** job to go work for a games company.

I know some very talented programmers who just don't want to move out of the state/country to find work.

I really liked Ray Muzyka's answer to a question regarding experience in the industry. He mentioned that they regularly employ people without games development experience, in fact they usually see working for other games development houses as a minus (as you come to bioware with previous expectations). As long as you can prove at each level of their assessment that you are fanatical about games, that you've got the desire to make games better, and have the determination to see it through, you're in. I'm guessing that somewhere along the line "desire and determination" equates to you showing what efforts you've put into learning what needs to be done, but it's still a way better attitude in my mind ...

Try making a demo, if your old enough you may remember the hugh Amiga/Atari demo scene of the late 80's early 90's, this was the breeding ground for game designers artists muso and coders.

Just to help you if you really have the skill.:)

thanks for the heads up trog. I'm going to give it a shot.

As far as AusGameDev goes. I'm still eager... i think we need to relook at the whole project and work out what it is we really want and can realisticly achieve (although, i suppose if we used Torque, this project isn't out of our league.)

Recently, i had a bit of a change of plans as far as my personal coding goes. I'm going to start working on far smaller projects - specifically, remakes of 80's arcade games. Simple, but if done effectivley and well, can look as good as any 3rd person shooter.

talk about it in irc if any of you are still keen on the whole gamedev idea.

Hmm... I recently went for a QA position, and will find out in a couple of days if I got it. While I was at the interview, I was told that if I expressed any interest or skills in other areas of game development, I would most likely be given a chance to work in that area further down the track. Sorta made me think the position was like a gateway sorta thing.
I mean, I know this probably doesn't seem like much to some people, but I found it interesting that anyone they take on board, they don't fire, but rather give them a position somewhere else in the company. Anyway, just something to think about I guess.
